What's the deal the samba server in OSX?

I've set it up to share my "Public" folder, yet when I login from my macbook I can access my main OS partition despite it not being on the share list.
 
I thought it's being phased out with Apple's support of samba2 now.

Yes the machines both run the same user account - is that it then? Odd as it doesn't happen with Linux.
 
Apple are only supporting AFP for Timemachine and backwards compatibility. Samba2 seems to be their new favourite from Mavericks onwards.

Never come across NFS. Version 3 and 4 are both supported in Mavericks. Is it faster than Samba or AFP?
