from browsing and searching round here i seem to have found quite a few nice free osx software apps that cover most bases... however there's still one or two tasks for which i've been unable to find any recommendations for pc equivalent osx software.

firstly, i need some cd printing software that has a good canon ip4000 full-face cd templace associated with it. previously for the pc i'd been using the label printing bit included with the nero package, but this isn't mac compatible :( i don't need an entire disc burning suite like nero though, just the label printing software.

secondly, i also require a nice all-in-one video converting package that will take a few avi files and convert them into dvd compliant mpegs with minimum fuss. again i was using the nero vision thingy on the pc that came in the nero suite. i already have vlc player installed so i think most of the codecs i could ever need are already on here, but is there any conversion software that will automatically find these and just do it's job without being complicated?

thirdly, i have slapbook and virtuedesktops installed. however i don't really find the four seperate desktops useful (one will do me) and found that it changed screens too easily as the sensor is very sensitive! with the laptop on my lap just a slight movement triggered an annoying desk switch. so i'm thinking a more useful task for this could be to bring my dashboard on and off. is there a program that can link the motion sensor to dashboard, as slapbook does to virtuedesktops?

and finally... :) sort of ot but how long do you guys with macbook 2ghz c2ds find that your battery is lasting? i checked mine out with coconutbattery and it seems in good shape, only six weeks old (since manufacture i presume?) and carries 5170mah of it's original 5200mah capacity after three charge cycles. the assistant who sold the laptop to me in the shop said it was a "six hour battery" and that this meant "it lasts six hours with real usage and wireless switched on". i'm finding that with wireless on, just light web browsing use, mine is lasting more lke two and a half to three hours. i know this is still reasonable but it had been hyped up so much that this feels like a let-down? i wanted to buy a longer life battery in the shop before he told me this would last six hours, so now i'm annoyed and wish i had bought a second battery!

Why don't you just use the official CD Labelprint software from Canon?

I think Handbrake can do this although it's been so long since I used it, I'm not sure.

ahh handbrake... i have read about that but not tried it - will check it out, thanks :)

as for canon cd label print, it doesn't print all the way to the edge of the disc face but leaves a small white border which i don't like. it's a complete ball ache trying to adjust the settings to fit a disc manually... hence my desire for some software that comes with a pre-made template.

The link to handbrake is in the sticky :)

As for the white border.. I thought that was down to the printer itself.. leaving a margin between the printable area and where the border is
