OSX Volime Control

I am told that if a toslink is plugged into a Macbook the OS volume control becomes unavailable and max output is deliverd.

If true, is there a workaround?

I was surprised to discover this when I connected my Mac Mini through optical, yes it is true. Any volume controls within applications (i.e iTunes) will still work though. I haven't looked for any other workaround because it doesn't really adversely affect me.

Pipe it in to a SoundFlower device and adjust the volume on that.

Though it's sort of the whole point of digital output that the bits are unmolested!

Except no one's fixed the issue with Soundflower where audio degrades after an undefined period of time
