Hi guys. Just wondered if anyone has come across an OTG with USB and HDMI on it without it costing the earth? More for diagnosis/data transfer scenarios from an admin perspective.

We get through a bunch of Android handsets with cracked screens where they'll just be 'dead'/black screens and you can hear the phone still 'active' behind, ringing, notifications etc. Repairs are getting more and more expensive (£200+) so recently we've just replaced them with new rather than repair. With a pattern unlock on most handsets, Android will not allow Smartswitch/Kies to connect to a handset for recovering/backing up/transferring data for users between handsets. So we've gone the avenue of having everything sync to Google/Samsung accounts on them, but it's not perfect (without massive data requirements) when it comes to all the media on them.

I've used OTG's for USB or HDMI, but just need a device which will do both (so I can plug a mouse in to unlock the pattern while viewing on HMDI). I understand this is heading into the realms of phone shops/data recovery, but it's quite a basic device requirement for administrators with modern smartphones. Or certainly those with fragile screens, like the ones we seem to be using (or more accurately how careless our users are with them!) :o

My drawer is getting quite full of Samsung J5/J6/A5/A40's. So would be also handy to wipe them and send away for recycling! ;)

It depends on the phone as they all vary with what they can support. I'm not sure about micro USB, but there are USB-C docks/hub adapters that tends to work with the majority of Android phones and you can find them for £20 odd.

Link them to me - I'll bet none of them have HDMI and USB!

micro-usb/USB-C conversion is not an issue.

You can search "usb c hub" or "usb c dock" and there are plenty of results on the rainforest: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adapter-QGeeM-microSD-Compatible-MacBook-Gray/dp/B08733BK1W/

Just bare in mind the phone itself needs to be USB 3.0, some phone's USB-C are only 2.0 which does not have the bandwidth to handle this.

I don't think a micro USB to USB-C adapter will work as micro USB itself is limited in terms of output, and will most likely be unable to do both HDMI and USB together.

OTG basically means the phone can act as a host, which all these accessories require, which pretty much all recent phones support now. The OTG branding itself hasn't been used much any more so you don't need to look for it, just check that it works for phones.

I have a Anker USB C Hub, PowerExpand+ 7-in-1 USB C Hub Adapter which was £37; this has USB A, USB C, HDMI. You obviously need the phone your connecting to to support it though.

You connect it to a recent Samsung like the S9 and it'll start the DEX mode so it outputs to the HDMI and operates like a normal desktop computer.

Thanks, clears things up and probably explains why I found very few of them!

I think they have to be USB 3.1 to get video out.
Ahhh, so checking the phone supports USB 3.1 on something like gsmarena will give me an idea if its going to work or not? Anything else I need to also look for? Version of android matter? Samsung site has always been pretty useless for technical info...

Hadn't heard of DEX mode before, how do I tell what devices support it?

Good shout with Anker, they've recently turned into the first brand I check for mobile/usb stuff anyway.

It's not just the version of Android to check for. For example even though the hardware supports it, Google disabled display out on their Pixel phones on a software level, possibly to drive people to buy their Chromecast devices. Samsung however are usually friendly with this, at least with their S series phones.

Dex mode is basically Samsung's desktop UI which can automatically turn on when connected to an external screen. If there's a Dex mode option in the settings and a quick toggle for it, your phone supports it. But it's not needed for external devices.
