What kind of money buys a good quality double bed that you can raise with gas lift arms so you can store things under the mattress frame? I see great reviews on amazon for sub £200 beds but wouldn't I need to spend more for something reliable that won't break?

I've been looking at them for a couple of years but still not convinced it is something I want or not. It seems like a good idea but I can't quite convince myself to buy one.

For me, I have limited space so it would be great for storing some clothes, towels and anything else. My bed is very old, though still comfy and has 4 large side drawers which have been useful, but I think one large storage space is even better. I suspect beds (just the frame without the mattress) under £300 or £400 might be prone to breaking, such as not being able to take the weight of a mattress or the gas lift arm failing. I just wonder if anyone here owns one and what they paid.

We have one, just be careful with the weights they support, by the time you put on a decent mattress, bedding etc it soon builds up.

We spent a lot of time trying to find one that was both strong and looked nice, even then I've since had to make some 'modifications' to strengthen it to remove any form of creaking.

I got an ottoman bed from eBay back in 2017 for under £200, just a simple black cloth base.

I went for a side opening one due to the layout of the room, and it comes in two halves with two gas struts for each side. This is the key part to ottoman beds, the front opening ones with a single gas strut on each side are so much easier to accidentally twist and are lifting the weight of the mattress with two gas struts instead of four.

Still going strong and am opening in fairly regularly and is still in perfect condition! :)

They are a great idea, empty space under a bed is just wasted space.

But as above, it's surprising once you've got a decent mattress that weights 10's of KG's, plus adding on some more for duvet and pillows. I certainly wouldn't buy the cheapest possible for fear that the arm would eventually go.

Even better, see if you can buy one that has a long guarantee on it (specifically mentioning the lifting components) as that'll give you some peace of mind that if it breaks within the guarantee period, you can get it repaired/replaced.

Been looking for one for a while inc the ebay ones and argos but never convinced of the quality so got an Ikea Malm Ottoman.
More expensive at £379 del but very good quality.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

Very interesting, I wasn't aware of side opening beds. I like the idea of it having more gas struts. Do you know the brand of your bed if I wanted to check one out online?

This one right? It's £315.

That's the sort of minimum price I'd expect to pay for quality. Given that it's going to be used everyday for years, I think it's worth spending a bit. The white looks great but I think black would show less marks as they can get grubby after a while. Definitely one for me to consider.

Been back through my eBay and it doesn't seem to go far enough back for me to find the exact listing but it was similar to this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4ft6doub...hash=item56d8ea3fc4:m:mjZOh2dwOdfHb3kzFW2zKJA

Can't remember it being that expensive however, sure it was under £200.

As you can see from the image there's four gas struts, two for each "half" of the bed. I also find having two seperate sections handy for organising stuff :)

Yes thats the one but i got king size and delivery was £29.

I have one it's a double - had it for 10 years now and I think I got it from tesco's online store that they no longer do. I can't remember exactly how much I paid as it was 10 years ago but it was around £350.

It was made with a faux leather finish and tbh still looks and works great to this day.

I am in the market for a new bed but only because I want a king size or bigger now rather than the bed falling apart.

TBH you don't need to spend much on a frame. All it is is a support mechanism for the mattress. The mattress is where all your budget should go. it's why you have people making bed frames out of pallets. You could even make a frame out of bricks if need be. So long as it supports the mattress you are okay.

Thanks silverblack.

Megahurtz, I'm glad you showed me that. Well I won't be going for a side opener now because I need one big continuous space rather than separate two partitions. Pity. Unless of course there are side openers with double struts and no partition.

That might be true for a regular frame, but I think with the gas lifting frames they would need to be strong and well constructed.

Yeah mine is a double gas strut lifting ottoman. They have you the option for side or bottom lifting too.

All I'm saying is you don't need to spend thousands on a frame put the majority of your budget into the mattress.

I'd say for every pound you spend on the frame you should be spending at least 3 more on the mattress as bare minimum.

We've been trying to decide if the IKEA Malm ottoman bed is a decent one to got for too. I'll be watching this thread.:)

So if the frame cost £300 the mattress should cost £900 to £1200? No way, lol.
