Went out to empty the hoover contents into the bin yesterday and heard some hysterical sobbing and crying, turning around I see a pretty young girl in quite clearly a very distressed state sitting on the kerb, floods of tears, mascara streaming down her face, clutching her wrist and wailing with pain. Quite cleary Eastern European, as I approach a lad is arriving on scene who obviously knows her, he's trying to get her on to her feet and calm her down - I'm half expecting to be involved in a fight between a couple as I approach..

As I get closer I see the source of her anguish, her right index fingertip has gone, I can see about half an inch of clear fingertip bone exposed, blood all over the kerbside - I sprint back to my house to grab some kitchen towel and shout up to the wife who grabs a clean tea towel from the airing cupboard - I call for an ambulance, at this time my neigbour comes out - she's a trained nurse and helps trying to calm the girl down. Neighbour discussed the situation with the emergency operator , agrees to take the girl to casualty rather than wait for an ambulance.

Turns out she's been posting Taxi cards through letterboxes, but this particular house has a dog that took a liking to her fingers when she tried to push the card through the letterbox - crunch... the dog is only a small terrier, amazing the amount of damage that he did to her finger....

I carefully put a sticky note on the owners door telling him to see me when he got back , for some odd reason I didn't attempt to post it through! he didn't seem all that suprised it had happened - I got the impression it wasn't the first time, he called the police to let them know about the incident, and later on called around next door to thank my neighbour for taking the girl to casualty. He remarked that he'd found the chewed up fingertip and half a false nail in his hallway....ew

To be honest I don't recall seeing a sign, I'll have a look tonight again. In any case I reckon he's in for a legal rollercoaster over this, particularly when postmen have been claiming thousands for merely cutting themselves on the letterbox flap !

My first thought, however a card is quite small and the temptation to stick your hand into the letter box to push it right through is there.. When you've posted quite a few, you'd do this by habit..

Must've hurt poor girl..!!

Exactly - the letterboxes in our cul-de-sac are all the same design, draught excluder brushes front and back, so posting something like a business card requires it to be pushed all the way through otherwise it will be trapped inside the door.
