Not sure if this has already been answered on these forums but,

What sort of system spec and how much would it cost to build a rig which would be on par with the xbox one and ps4?

It really depends on how far you want to go. How much of a quality freak are you, or even more so how much are you willing to spend?
Sure, you can build one for around the same price but with no guarantee it's going to be a quality build with all the bells and whistles for gaming.

perhaps a bit over the cost of either console, but of course a PC does much more than stream netflix and play overpriced games

Yep. Plus for an equal comparison you have to take the cost of a home laptop/pc which is usually around £300+ because with buying a PC you wouldn't have to have a home PC.

Eh?

I believe its mostly the upgradabilty of PC's. You can't go cracking open an Xbox one to up the gpu .

Yes. I know that and I agree. I was adding to the fact. If you buy a gaming PC it fills the role of a home PC so you can take into account that you wont have to go out and buy a home PC.

lol sorry Hyburnate, I did think it may have been asked but got curious at what ever time it was last night.
A friend of mine was on his xbox one last night and trying to say that it was better than a gaming pc for many reasons. I of course laughed at him with geeky snobbery and came to you guys to back me up ;)

Thanks for the replies even though it has been asked many a time

PC Master Race ;) Tell him the PS4 outspecs it in pretty much every way. And then tell him your PC is probably 100% better :p. Then he'll start crying...

Apart from a couple of titles that you can't get on the pc I fail to see what a console does better than a pc hooked up to a big TV with controllers.... If you like that kind of thing

I am a PC gamer myself... but as i understand it, games are optimised for the consoles, so to get the same high quality gaming experience your going to want to spend a fair bit more money than a console costs to get the same gaming experience (this is until mantle starts coming out on more games).

Saying this, I havent actually seen one of the new consoles being played and therefore don't actually know how the graphics compare to say a £1k gaming PC... it may be the case that you could spend £500 on a pc, like the one specced by thereaperguy and get the same performance... but as the graphics for the consoles improves (optimisations get better) the likelyhood is that you'd already be getting almost all of the potential out of the £500 rig... and you'd end up having to spend a LOT more upgrading it...

A lot of the optimizations they make are actually lowering the resolution, turning the fov down , lowering the frame rate. Most games on the xbox/ps3 are now running is lower that 720p and being upscaled. The coding optimizations they make will work on PC as well. In the past when a console has come out, a PC of the same cost was a lot worse, and it would take a while for the consumer PC to catch up.
Not the case in this gen, they have released them, and they can be beaten by similar priced pc hardware already, and if you were to take the fact you can add the few hundred you would spend on a pc to go with a console, you can get a much better machine, which you can upgrade over the next 10 years.

High end PC hardware already rips the consoles to ****. being able to do 1600p, or triple 1600p, at 60-120fps instead of 1080p at 30fps. IQ is also better on some pc titles already.
