Out of hours renumeration rates - UK compared to AUS

I queried renumeration rates for on call support to my boss as our Australia based collegues receive 60% more for the same work.

My reply was that it's "based on costs of living in each region"

The cost of living offset is surely covered by the huge increase in salary for AUS region rather than also increases in on call.

Cost of living in AUS region doesnt look to be 60% higher than UK, more like 10% higher on average unless you live in London which whoever said cost of living probably didnt think about (regional base in UK)
 
I would have thought it more likely that it's to do with local market competition rather than 'cost of living' - if every other similar employer is paying bigger money for on call, they have to match it to get the staff.

The business will pay the minimum necessary to secure the required services in the local area.

If that means they need to pay 3x hourly for call out in Australia but 1.5x hourly for call out in the UK, that's what they'll do. If it's not competitive with similar roles in the local market, the staff (i.e. you) should be moving to those local companies offering better packages.
 
Different pay in different countries is common - you wouldn't expect the guys over in India doing IT support aren't getting paid the same as the UK teams.
 
The cost of living in Australia is astronomical compared to the UK.

A bottle of smiroff vodka costs around £40 and in a UK super market you'll be able to get one for what? £15-£20? This is just an example, the only things which are close to UK prices are fresh fruit, veg and meat as they have the capacity to grow most of it in Australia itself, basically everything else needs to be imported which ramps prices up dramatically.

Same as here in UK - someone who did same job as I did but lived in Lundun got a grand more than us Per year and I am going back a few years - it's probably even higher now % wise.

won't help the op with his remuneration problem but it'll certainly make a lot of folks feel better about the world.
 
Virtually no private/public company pays based on cost of living. It's almost always cost of labo(u)r; i.e. how much it costs to replace you. Cost of labor for on-call in Australia is clearly a lot higher than the UK, which is why your employer pays people more in Australia.

Another example; it's no surprise that people in IT/technology are paid far more in the USA than the UK (and pretty-much anywhere else in the world), due to the concentration of employers (who also pay top dollar) and intense competition for the best talent.

If anything I think companies are trying to phase out London weighting allowance type stuff - the job I was doing back in 2002 those in London got an extra 4 grand specifically as a London allowance - now they are just on a different band and get probably more like 1.5K extra.

It makes you query why anyone would bother these days. Living in London is not cheap and is now in the top 20 most expensive places in the world. Nowhere in Australia hits the top 20 for example...HK being at the top.

Presumably the majority of the expense of London is housing costs. I never got the people who travel for hours a day to work in London...but I guess there are a great deal of jobs there. Just quality of life is low...
