Out of memory errors - Can anyone help?

My system runs with 24gb DDR4 ram. Everything was working fine, but at the weekend I got a new NVME so had to reinstall windows 11. Now whenever I have multiple firefox tabs open or play a game, it crashes and I get an out of memory error.

I have tried using both system managed page file and a custom size page file at 8gb size, both still crash.

HWINFO tells me my maximum physical memory in use is 75% (18.4gb), maximum page file use 3% but virtual memory in use is 99.9%, so it seems I am running out of virtual memory even though I have 5.5gb physical ram free and page file is hardly being used.

Anyone know how to sort this out because I had no problems before reinstalling windows.

Do you have any swapfiles set at all?

Because this sounds like Windows is not able to manage swapfiles itself, however since the default is to manage paging itself it is strange that a new install has this wrong.

Still, maybe when the Windows installer was looking for space for the pagefile, only a tiny drive/partition was available and it's being forced to use that.

As for where to find the virtual memory/swapfile settings on Windows 10/11. Well Microsoft seem to have hidden it very well!

The old control panel should still be around though so RUN: sysdm.cpl should find it.

That image shoes 15GB available which would suggest 9 GB is not being seen. I would suggest going into your bios to check how much ram is being seen. 24GB would suggest 2x8 and 2x4 sticks. Are these sticks the same speed rating as you will only be able to run them at the slowest speed.

3x8gb sticks identical ram (1 stick from the kit was bad and I never got round to sending it back).
All three sticks show up in task manager
