Well this is kind of a mute point... i hope!

The last week i have had an issue with my rig where seemingly randomly i have had the screen go black and the monitor displays 'out of range' and some H&V numbers. returning overclocks on the GPU to stock have had no effect as has timings on the RAM so does this mean my GPU is borked or on its way out?

A mute point as i am waiting on my X1800XT being delivered today along with a HannsG 19" WS, i'm just hoping this problem wont continue with my new gear.

I'm hoping the X1600XT is ok as i would like to sell it at some point, but not going to sell a duff card.... Does anyone have an opinion on this?

Have googled for this out of range problem but haven't got a great answer, and there seems to be no good reason for it as nothing has changed recently to lead to the problem.

could be its actually your monitor dying which is why it randomly decides that the signal its getting is out of the range it can display. Its an error id usually expect to see when youve changed the resolution to something the monitor cant handle but as you say you havent changed annything id think the monitor could be at fault

As said above, out of range means the monitor can't do the requested resolution/refresh rate. When you say 'at random' you mean it can happen just sat at the windows desktop? If that's the case then it sounds like monitor or video card is bust. If it only happens in certain games and it's consistent then it could just be a setting somewhere or a software problem.

The good news is with new monitor and video card arriving you can find out which component is faulty by only installing one of them to start with and seeing if the problem continues.

Yeah or it could be a faulty lead, as said you get the 'out of range' when you select a resolution your monitor doesn't support, so it could be the monitor on its way out, or could be the lead losing the signal or something. :)

I had this problem a while back on a machine I was upgrading for someone. It was when I changed their old CRT monitor to a LCD one. I set the refresh rate down to 60Hz and everything, but after a few reboots it started given 'Out of Range' which normally means that it is trying to a refresh rate the monitor can't handle.

I managed to solve it by removing the graphics driver (was a nVidia card) from the system completely and then re-installing some newer one (only one version higher of the offical ones). Since then it stopped being silly. Don't know why it would keep changing the refresh rate like that though...

Yeah just when sat on desktop, or in a game, whenever really... it doesn't discriminate lol. I would think it was to do with my refresh rate then, which I changed to 75Hz a few weeks back, but has been fine the two weeks perviously... worth a go though.

Yeah hopefully will be able to narrow it down, currently waiting on City Link, as always lol.

@LoadsaMoney: I hope its not the lead, that would be a pretty pathetic reason to throw away an otherwise perfectly good monitor, as the lead is non-removable, either way i guess its handy having a new screen coming, but would like to use the CRT for anothter rig :)

So hopefully you guys are right and my X1600 is A'Ok, should be its not far of new. Thanks for your help, will try lowering to 60Hz on the other rig and see if that sorts it out.
