This might be a dumb question, but are all 775 mobo's penryn compatable out of the box? I remember a few needed a bios update in order to run the penryn...is this still the case (I hate updating the BIOS).

Apologies if this has been asked already.

Thanks in advance.

/edit - specifically referring to newer mobo's like the G31, P31, p35, x38 etc.

Most of the X38's might be, but I'd guess a load of the others may not come with a new BIOS.

It's usually very easy to update the BIOS these days.

On the back of this thread Im getting an 8200, can someone reccomend a fairly budget (poor :'() mobo, that will work straight out of the box, thanks :)

Found this Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L iP31 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard (obviously cant post the site), I think its compatible but if someone could confirm that would be great!

My Asus Maximus Formula needed a bios flash, Luckily i had been pre-warned so had an older CPU ready.

Yeah that's what I don't have (being an AMD system currently) so hence need to run one out of the box. I know i'll have to update the bios at somepoint (as much as I hate it) but need it to boot and post etc with the penry in.

I am guessing the P45 would support it out of the box (and that can't be too far away now). But I will read up on that G33 mate, that could be the way to go for now.

Built on a ds3r for a friend with an e8400, worked straight away with original bios. Little bit pricey, but with gigabyte you get what you pay for, ds3r has a wealth of features more than the ds3l.

assuming that OcUK's stock is less than 5-6 months old abit IP35 series should run Penryns out of the box.

Will the Ds3L run it straight out the box do you reckon?, Dont have an old cpu to use for flashing so need to be sure i get the right one :( cheers :)

Just UPDATE the BIOS! It's easy. Make sure you have everything prepared before.

but if it has the old bios surely the new chip wont even boot ?

I built a system for my Dad, the board was an ASUS P5K Pro and I had to update that BIOS to get the E8200 working. The initial boot presented me with a warning page saying I needed to update BIOS, so I did and it was fine. Just make sure you have the BIOS ready as I've heard it only allows you to boot once and then it doesn’t boot at all if you don’t flash it. So then you would have to put an older CPU in then flash.
