Hi, I have been out of the PC game for awhile now, lack of decent titles etc haven't really made me want to keep with the PC gaming, but this has changed this year with some good titles comming out soon.

I am after some recommendations for a decent graphics card, ( budget upto £250 + )

my system is old hack but I think it would still be alright for now. ( lol )

6GB DDR2 PC8500
Asus Maximus II Formula motherboard P45 Chipset
Intel Q9450 Quadcore CPU.
Hiper Power 880watt SLI PSU (HPU-4M880-PE )
ATI Powecolor 4870 512mb Graphics card at the moment

and a SSD Crucial 60GB HD

any ideas appreciated.

It's gonna be for BF3 and batman and probably elder scrolls v

Cant go wrong with the ATI 6950 and then flash it to 6970!!

To be fair i think that PSU would be up to the task its 880 watt (which is more than enough) and is SLI to boot, so if using just 1 card will be fine

A decent PSU, and either the 560 Ti or 6950 2gb (certain models can be flashed to 6970). What speed is your CPU running at? And what resolution do you play on?

5830 x-fire would be better value IMO. It's nearly equal to a 5970! (with overclocking ofcourse!)

whats wrong with the OP's PSU? it has a good power rating, seems a reasonable quality make, and after a very quick look can only find good reviews of it.....

I have an unflashed, but OC'ed 6950 and it plays pretty much any game i've tried on max setting with no problems, Batman included (my res 1900x1080).

Finding the right 6950 to flash to a 6970 seems hard these days (they were the first revision cards, so are sold out in most places now), so if you are happy to spend "£250+" i'm sure you would be very happy with a 6970.
This 6970 is £259 and there are a few more around this price http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-191-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752
This 6970 is said to be the "dogs *****" @ £320 if you can stretch that far http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-123-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

From what i see no one really knows what stress BF3 will put on a GPU, but im sure an OC'ed 6950/70 will play it at high or almost high settings.

I have a Hiper 550watt psu in a computer that has been running for about 6 years - no problems whatsoever. Infact, its now on its third set of components.

before this PSU I had one of the first enermax 1000watt galaxy PSU's, that failed on me due to giving out a poor +12v voltage rail If I recall.

even the big boys can produce something that can fail, the enermax wasn't even that old at the time.

As already mentioned , get rid of that hyper they are re-nowned for failing and taking out the rest of the pc

6950 ( a flashable one)
new PSU

jobs a good un :)

...except for the distress it may cause when it fail to flash.

As people have already said, the speed difference between a 6950 and a 6970 is only around a mere 3%, so it would make more sense to go for something like a MSI 6950 2GB Twin FrozR III and just overclocked it higher, rather than going for a 6950 2GB card with reference cooler that may or may not flash, and with a cheap cooler that will most certainly make the card run hotter and noiser.
