Hi All,

My current rig has finally started to show its age and is really struggling with the latest games.
I have come onto OC website to take a look at a potential budget for replacement only to realize I know NOTHING anymore :-(

Could someone either point me at a good guide/article or inform me what I will need these days. My main concern is budget and future proofing. I have no idea what socket to go for with either Intel or AMD mother boards, and i don't really care which I go for.

The only other things I know is that I want Nvidia Gfx to allow for sli and because I like them over AMD

Sorry to be so vague, I have been away from the hardware game since I got my 780iFTW board!

Hi.

Simply put Intel rule the roost with CPUs+boards.

If you are gaming then a i5 4690K+Z97 board will do you fine, if you do video editing or photoshop then a i7+Z97 or i7+X99 will be better.

What case+PSU do you have? what drives do you have (are they all SATA for example as IDE no longer exists).

What is your budget?

What monitor do you have/resolution?

thanks for the quick reply. Should prob have stated my intended use.

I am interested in Gaming and OCing. I guess that things haven't changed in regards to things that OC well costing more but would be nice to get something that let me fiddle with it a bit without breaking the bank. Budget is going to be a very strong factor in this.

Just looking at the suggested Z97 boards - can I take from this that socket 1150 is the one to go for? Whats the intel CPU roadmap for future CPU's looking like for this socket?

If you are into overclocking then you must have a Z97 or X99 chipset board and a "K" CPU.

K CPUs have unlocked multipliers so you can just increase that and the vcore needed rather than messing around with the 100MHz BCLK (modern day FSB).

But you can increase the BCLK too if you wish.

The CPUs you see available now and the two Broadwell CPUs (coming June/July) are it for that socket and chipset.

After this later in the year is Z170 and socket 1151 Skylake.

How serious are you about overclocking? do you just want a nice air cooler and a solid 4.5Ghz? or would you want to go water cooling/biggest Air cooler and try and get the most from the CPU in every area and even tweak memory timings?

Thanks for the guidance, I have been looking around and there are some good deals to be had.

Out of interest what am i gaining or losing but going for Z97 over X99? X99 seems higher end but why?

X99 you get DDR4 memory (but so is SKylake) and more memory slots so more memory capacity.

You get 6 core+CPUs

More SATA/More USB.

2/3/4way SLI/Crossfire support, Z97 is usually 2 tops (there are exceptions).
