in the arse of england.
going from a 939 opty 170 @ 3Ghz
2 gig of corsair DDR
DFi Lanparty Ultra
water cooled
HD3870
XPSP2

to

Q6600
4 gig DDR2 Black dragon
unsure of the board yet, waiting for the details.
water cooled
HD4870
Vista home premium 64bit

primarily i play supreme commander, encode the odd DVD, cod4 and i like using AA+AF at my best res on all my games, (1680 X 1050 or HD if supported)

would also like info on what overclocks to expect.

so thats basically it, I am an AMD fan at heart and always will be but i am being GIVEN a quad core and board so i can hardly say no now can i...

will just have to feel dirty every time i use my pc :p:D

well clocks will depends on board, Q6600 and cooling.. but I would imagine at least 3.2ghz.. with a good Q6600 on decent water 3.8ish

I hope you are building a new loop for your upgrade otherwise i would advise against your current loop if your swtiching it over (depends on components though).

current loops fine, its a nexxos XP block on a Dtek db1 500lph pump with half inch loop, around 1.5 feet. current cpu temp is at 38oC never breaks 45oC @ 3ghz 1.525v full load just need to find some 775 brackets for it.

Pretty much the same upgrade I did.

I went from a 3ghz 4200+ x2, 2 gb ram and a 8800GTS 320Mb to rig as per my sig (although there was a 8800GT and 8800GTS 512Mb along the way as well)

The difference is like chalk and cheese. Windows zips along, encoding a full movie takes less than 15 minutes and framerates in games at 1680 x 1050 with everything on max detail (crysis excluded of course) flies along at even 50fps+ on GRID

COD4 with lots of AA/AF is just amazing.

And supreme commender is actually one of the few games which takes advantage of all 4 cores on the quad.

As for overclocks expect 790/1050 minimum from your 4870 (some people get 850/1100 but it's pot luck but helps if you add a gpu block to your water loop)

As for the quad, recent q6600's have been poor overclockers with some struggling to reach 3.3Ghz although 3Ghz should be a certainty. Hopefully since you have been given one, it might be a much better clocker as the early ones were very good (G0 stepping that is, not b3) and mine hits 3.8Ghz stable under water.

I guess it depends on how your 4 Gb of RAM is configured.
2 X 2 GB will probably be good for 3.6 GHz, 4 X 1 GB (like mine) will limit your Oc I managed 3.4 GHz but run 3.25 GHz 24/7.
Its the extre stress on the memory controller that may be the problem.
