I currently have the following:

I7 920 @ 4.2Ghz
6Gb DDr3
UDR3
PC Power and Cooling 750 Watt

Im currently using an old 4870 and ive just started gaming again. I game at 1920 by 1200 and the graphics card is really showing its age with all these new games.

I was looking at staying with ATI just because they are normally priced better. Looking at spending £250 max. Is the 7970 really worth the extra over the 7950?

So the question is... What do you guys recommend?
 
No, the 7970 doesn't offer MUCH more grunt over the 7950 for the price. Also, the 79xx range have excellent overclocking ability, so a 7950 can easily get close to stock 7970 performance. The 7950 offers the best performance/£ this generation, above the Nvidia offerings too.

If you want to stay with AMD (ATI) then that's great as this is a year when they have really excelled.
OCuk currently bundles games with the 79xx series too, further increasing their preexisting advantage.

A 7950 will max everything at 1200p, except for maybe the highest settings and framerates on Crysis 1 and Metro games, but thats inconsequential.
 
Sounds like you certainly need the 7950 tbh, just simply overclock it to match 7970 performance and jobs done :)
 
At over 4GHz I imagine your i7 wouldn't be too restrictive.

That 7950 has a good, quiet cooler. The Sapphire coolers are in general excellent for noise. There are cheaper models on OCuk but you can't really go wrong with that one.
 
I know the sapphire is a little more expensive but i already own sleeping dogs. id sell sleeping dogs and far cry 3. so it works out around the same price really. Yes im being sad, i just love the look of the cooler on the sapphire lol! :o

Edit:

However i do plan to overclock the nuts of the card, so if i cant change the volts on the sapphire that is problem for me.
 
sapphire cards tend to suffer from coil whine more than most from what ive read? plus you only get a 2 year warranty

why not a 7850 card?
 
if its not essential the 8k series cards are out soon so that might push current 7k card prices down further
 
Should have said I have the 7850 msi,can do 1220mhz core,1530mhz mem,no idea on the 7950 but these cards do clock well
 
MSI or Gigabyte purely for warranty bud. I have seen a few cards lately with problems and you don't want to be waiting weeks for your card to come back if you are one of the unlucky ones. At least with Gigabyte and MSI, you get a quick turn around should you have any probs.
