As we haven't got a current thread on this, thought I would start one.

Just curious if anyone else is playing this and how you rate it?

I bought the OOTP 21 version rather than the latest 22. Must admit originally I got completely floundered in the myriad of different screens which make Championship Manager look nice and straightforward. I actually refunded it, but then relented and bought it again.

As I said in another thread, part of the challenge is that baseball is a relatively simple game surrounded by a very complex management and player trading system, doesn't really compare to how soccer or even cricket works.

Rather than take on a MLB team straight off, I plumped for one in the Minors and used the historical game to start back in 1993 - using 2020 seems a bit mashed up due to Covid presumably affecting the real season.

Trying to understand the mechanics of the team structure is one of the biggest challenges. Unlike cricket where everyone takes their turn at bat, you have a group of batsman (9 I think) who also act as fielders and your pitchers who sit in the bullpen and wait their turn. The pitchers seem to tire very easily and one game seems to follow another with very little rest in between. I am literally fielding players who are totally knackered!

The other thing I haven't figured yet is how the heck do you set up training? Although I have a couple of coaches there is nowhere in the menus I can see to set up training, although TBH with matches following thick and fast on consecutive days it would be hard to schedule anything anyway. I also see no options to give talks, either to the team or individual players, nor is there any options for "shouts" from the dugout during a game.

I like the matchplay, particularly the ball by ball mode though it can be frustrating when your batsman actually manages to hit the ball, it drifts towards first base and automatic out (I presume they have to run once they get a hit). Stealing bases is one of the more gratifying elements of the gameplay, though doesn't always work out.

At least the game is making me think though and learning something about a sport where most of my knowledge has come from watching movies about it!

Heya,

I started with OOTP 17 & 17 from humblebundle deals back in the day. I played a bit with them, but never really got into it - (Redsox fan since 1997, saw them in '98 at Fenway). Then I picked up OOTP21 on a <£4 deal late in 2020 on steam. I started watching Avindian on YT and he ran a 'historical sim' starting back in 1870's odd and I thought that was a great idea (love the film Field of Dreams!), so started it myself. Managed to win WS in second year (fluke!), but it's been barren since then (am about 30 hours in and around 1900). I picked up a lot of knowledge from the r/OOTP on reddit and various channels on YT -

I play GM and let the AI be the Manager, but the game allows all sorts of aspects to be turned off and back on as you learn, and I'm still learning. I don't sim each pitch/at bat but usually sim a week at a time. You need to get your head around 25 man rosters, 40 man rosters, Minor leagues, bullpens, switch hitters and platooning (RH and LH against certain pitchers, I think), team chemistry, the main draft, rule 5 draft, options, salary budgets, DFA (designated for assignments), IL (Injury list 15day or 60day), waiver wire, line-ups, different statistics etc.

I think a 25man is usually made up with 10 - 12 pitchers (5 starters and the rest in the bullpen in modern day baseball), the rest are batters covering the various positions. There's some good tactics in this thread on reddit where they talk about:
  1. Get a catcher with 70+ catcher ability, to provide defense to your pitcher
  2. Always look for defensive ability first in SS and CF, at the very least.
  3. Team chemistry is important

OOTP 22 is now 64bit and it's apparently much smoother, so I'll jump to that at some point. There's been other changes too. There's usually a sale around the All-Star game (late July) and then in the post-season (Sept-Oct). If you want the opening day rosters, then you'll need the current year's version.

I really enjoy baseball - used to video it (showing my age!) back in the 90s on channel 5 (MLB on 5) with Jonathan Gould and Todd Macklin and now catch it on BT/ESPN - Baseball Tonight rather than the live games.

BTW, yes you do need to run if you hit the ball, as long as it stays in fair territory. It can be caught in foul territory, though. The pitcher actually hits in the National League. In the American League they don't - they use a Designated Hitter, sometimes an older power hitter, as they don't field a position. You should check the stamina stat on your pitchers - starting pitchers (SP) are normally around 80, relief pitchers (RP) around 20 (using a 20-80 scale).

Enjoy the game!
