My step brother is looking to upgrade his rig. I'm very out of touch now so I'm not sure how solid my suggestions are. He plays VR, FiveM and Rainbow 6 Siege
He will be keeping:
  • B450 Tomahawk
  • 3600 (suggested we find a 2nd hand 3800X3D)
  • RAM (to source another 16gb the same)
Everything else is being replaced and I have the following to start:

**GPU - he did express an interest in the 4070Ti but there's not much in there between that and the 4070. He also has flexibility for a new monitor should be decide, sounds like his current ones are trash.

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £997.85 (includes delivery: £11.98)

There is no such thing as a 3800x3d so presume you mean a 5800x3d .

B450 is only pcie3 so you could save a few pounds by dropping to a pcie3 m2 drive.

Case and fan are fine but cooler would change to phanteks to keep all the same, but there are cheaper alternatives.

Could go air cooler, take a look at the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 se , it's the performance king for £30.

The 7800xt is slightly faster than the 4070 mite be worth a look at but remember ray tracing performance will be worse as Nvidia rule with that.

GPU Zotac offer a 5 year warranty if registered within 30 days otherwise it's 3 years,

Ram just get 2 X 16gb 3200 or 3600mhz and sell your old stuff it will less hassle getting 4 sticks to work correctly.

Yup, it was a typo lol

He's dead set on RT so 4070 is his choice and I agree about the RAM in all honesty. While I can find some that match what we has, it might just be easier as some DDR4 modules have a massive delivery window.

How urgent is his purchase, rumoured 4070 super launch in mid Jan expected to be at the same price point as the 4070 for decent uplift in performance.
Either a cheaper 4070 or get the super if he can wait.

I'd rather have £70 extra towards a cpu than buy an AIO personally...

FWIW I have the aforementioned PA120SE and it is literally barely spinning after a few tweaks and my 5700x never goes above 64C and my entire rig is silent.

The 4070 is an absolute beast when it comes to undervolting, mine never goes above 135w draw even with RT on, with RT off, the most demanding games seem to be between 115-135w and the temp has never gone above 65C (the fan on my asus only kicks in at 65C and has a dual bios mode which I leave in the silent preset)

My entire rig is silent, all I use is 2 140mm BeQuiet Pure Wings 2's running at 550rpm fixed with pwm turned off, and the same fan in 120mm as exhaust again fixed at 550rpm.
My cheap mid size antec case is very meshy up front and on the top, and has mesh on the bottom for my zero rpm psu. You would hear a pin drop before hearing a noise from my system.

I'd much prefer this and having extra money towards a CPU/RAM, than to have a AIO, which serves no gains to me, and can end up with extra problems like the pump failing/air in the system, blah blah blah, stuff I can't be bothered with, for zero gain in temps.

FWIW the PA120SE will happily cool a 5800x3d and beats a Noctua NH-D15/BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 and as other have said, can be had for £30 posted elsewhere, I was going to get a DRP4 before I'd heard about this, then watched the evidence and it was a no brainer, and £50 cheaper! I did think about changing the fans but they're very impressive in both airflow/noise, and easily tweaked in seconds via PWM as I mentioned.

That's good to know, I'll let him know, thanks.

Yeah I'm giving him all the options currently including air, although I did just send him a revised one.
I'm trying to squeeze in a monitor for him as his current ones could do with being binned. He'd have a much better gaming experience on a 27/32 1440p screen.
