Outhouse Blown Render

Hi all,

Sorry if i've posted in the wrong place but i'm looking for advice regarding our brick/sandstone outbuilding which adjoins our ground floor tenement flat.

I spent all day yesterday stripping back blown render from the walls and have brought it back to the brickwork. I have no idea what to do with the roof though as the underlying wood etc. looks in poor condition - would it be best to continue stripping this off to re-render? Also would there be any issues with leaving the walls with bare bricks?

We are hoping to have the flat on the market on the next month or so and are looking to improve the outbuilding for the home report and viewers.

So when you say ‘render’ you mean internally?

if it has blown internally then it is highly likely that the walls are damp - if the roof timbers are in poor condition then it is highly likely as a result of a leak, condensation etc - which in turn could be responsible for the damp and blown render.

if the building is simply used for storage and you are going to sell then I see little reason to go to the expense of plastering the inside again - I would possibly see if I could sort out and cover the exposed roof however as that will just scream ‘issue’ to a surveyor or prospective purchaser
 
As someone in the process of buying I’d rather see the issue and be aware of it than seeing a nice new bit of plaster and being oblivious to it until it comes off the wall again.

Covering it up just feels a little underhand IMO.

Unless of course you get to the root of the problem and fix it first.
