Outlook 2000: Compact Now

In Outlook 2000 there is a button in the properties of the personal folders that says "compact now".

Can anyone tell me how this works? what exactly does it do to compact my email file? is it deleting things? or is it like a database compact?

When you delete emails in outlook it doesn't downsize the pst file. So compact just gets rid of the slack in the file.

It won't remove anything.

Good to do this now and again as once a PST goes above 2GB they have a habit of self destructing.
