I used to use Thunderbird at work and made regular use of the subject/sender search box on the top right of the screen that instantly hides mail that didn't meet specific criteria as you were typing it in the box.
We've had to change to Outlook 2003 recently as we now have our own Exchange server - I've tried in vain to find a similar function in Outlook, but it appears not to have it, unless it's there but hidden by default.
The Mac users here have Entourage and this DOES have the same feature as Thunderbird, so it seems odd that the flagship Windows mail package is lacking a feature present in its Mac equivalent and in one of its open-source rivals.
Any idea if Outlook 2003 does have the same function?
