Outlook 2010 Updating cache messages problem

Hi
I was wondering if someone could advise please.
My partrner has just had her laptop formatted and windows 7 64 bit installed.
The shop also installed Microsoft Office 2010 plus.
She uses Outlook on a regular basis, but since the new install, she is having problems, as Outlook is continuously 'updating cached messages', of which there are 150000 of them. This process cannot be cancelled, as far as I can see.
I assume that all these files are all of her old Emails that are being downloaded from the server???
While the updating is taking place it is almost impossible to send an Email.

After doing a bit of searching on Google, I followed a guide from Microsofts website which I thought may solve the problem, in which I attempted to disable 'cached exchange mode', but on her system, this option isnt available.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as it is driving her mad.

Thanks in advance

Simon

Thanks BuToNz
She is with Virgin.
She has left it overnight, but they just keep on coming.
Is there any way to stop it, disable it, or specify a date, from when she wants the download to start from?

Thanks again

Simon

It was setup with POP
We couldnt backup the file because her laptop decided to update itself to Windows 10 and wouldnt boot up after the upgrade.
In the past she has used Outlook from Office 2007 and this has never happened before. Is it just a Office 2010 thing?

Cheers
Simon

Thanks very much for the info.
If she decides to change the account to IMAP, will the downlading of the cached messages start from the beginning again?
