Outlook 2gb meltdown - help appreciated

Right, my boss' copy of Outlook 2000 has just swallowed his PST file because it went past 2gb (a known issue). We've tried Microsoft's inbox repair tool but that hasn't helped (expected because the problem was caused by large file size). We've also tried Microsoft's tool that truncates the PST file - this kind of works in that we can now open the file - unfortunately the emails that have been lost are the critical recent ones.

So I'm hoping someone has a suggestion for a fix, perhaps third party software that they've tried, we don't mind paying out for something. Thanks and Merry Christmas!

good luck with this issue, users are stubborn and hate cleaning up, then they get into this problem

a director at my old work had 3x 2gb files and an overflow file, mental

most were probably FWD/spam emails

oh dear the age old PST issue..

only suggestion i can think of is upgrading Outlook as above and try importing.

bledd - agreed. some of our exchange mailboxes are huge possibly due to the nature of the work some people do i.e. large format media. although i suspect 99% is pure laziness to clean their inbox. we're restricting this after the holidays though.

Ah cheers guys. Hadn't thought about importing the PST into a newer version of Outlook - will give that a go thanks! I think an enforced upgrade is probably the only long term solution and no doubt we'll eventually hit some new size limit.

Outlook 2007 is the key

At work we successfully managed to open a 4GB PST file, drag/drop the contents into about 8 smaller PST files, and give them back to the user. Outlook 2007 seems a lot more tolerable with large PST files than older versions of Outlook.
