Outlook Desktop Auto-Reading Emails

Hi all,

My company email server is Stackmail, which I had no problem connecting with on Outlook both on desktop and my mobile. I have other email addresses linked to outlook, but they are Microsoft domains.

The problem I am experiencing is that my desktop outlook will not show any new emails I receive overnight as unread. When I open outlook all new emails I received, since I shut down the PC the night before, are marked read only on this account. Emails that come in through the day are unread until I click on them.

I didn't have this issue with our previous email server (one.com). What is going on?

Another strange thing is that on my mobile I have almost the opposite experience - all messages are marked unread until I click them. This includes any that I have read on desktop. So if I have 5 emails I have dealt with on desktop, they still show as 5 unread emails on mobile.

Has anyone experienced this before? Any ideas what I can do to sort it out?

Just to keep a record of progress; one site I came across suggests that another device connected to the same email account using POP could be marking all emails as read when it pulls them.
The solution to this is to disconnect the POP account and reconnect with IMAP. I will try that and update this thread with the results. Maybe it can help someone else.

SOLVED

For the benefit of anyone else finding themselves in this situation, the problem was in fact that my android device was connected to the account using POP. When it dragged the emails to the device, it would mark them as read on my PC, but unread on the device.

I had to delete the POP account and reconnect with IMAP on the android device. A minor hitch was that the login kept failing - this is to do with a problem the outlook app has with special characters in passwords. If you cannot log in to outlook on mobile using IMAP (and your password contains symbols), change the email account password to one without symbols, or use more common symbols, then try again.

I have sent some test emails and now both my android device and my PC outlook accounts are working together - no automatic marking emails as read.
