Hi,

I finally got round to setting up outlook 2007 to monitor several email addresses, and so far all is going well. I have an aol email account, which to be honest, i never check and it gets clogged up with spam. Im very new to outlook, and was wondering how secure the email preview feature is. When i click on the email in the 'inbox', it displays the email/a preview of the email in a pane to the right. I quite like the reading pane feature, but am interested to know more about how secure it is. Since i do not want to expose my pc to email viruses etc, is there a way to clear out all of the spam without opening the emails in this pane (but leaving the pane on), or is outlook 'sandboxed' and quite secure?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated

Create new folder name 'AOL' or similar and create rule so that emails from the aol account go directly there.

Next click on the folder you have created and select View --> Reading Pan --> Off

This switches off the reading pane for that fodler only and then you can decide which emails to open fully.

You can configure Outlook not to mark the item as read when using the reading pane.
Have a look under Tools > Options > Other > Reading Pane, it should have a tickbox for "Mark item as read when viewed in the Reading Pane" and Mark item as read when selection changes".
I generally untick anything in this Reading Pane options and have safely previewed messages without problems. Also useful when not wanting to trigger any read receipts whenever people set them.
