I'm bit of an MS Outlook newbie, i have been using gmail or hotmail via a web page but i thought it would be best if i set up outlook now that i baught MS office 2007 ultimate for £39 (what an amazing deal when it retails for ~£460).

The first thing i need help with is that i notice gmail supports both POP and IMAP, now i have no clue which to use as i havn't cared much about email settings and such for years. I should note though that i intend to use outlook on both my laptop as well as my PC, so i need for emails to be available on both machines, i dont want to check my emails with my PC and then not be able to access them emails on my laptop because they have been removed from the server or something.

I don't have any other questions at the momment, but it wont let me open outlook untill i finish this wizard, so i will proberly have more questions once i get past entering POP/IMAP info.

Imap will leave the emails on the server, so you can alway access them from different pc's
Pop3 can keep them on the server also, but you need to tick the option in the advanced tab to leave a copy of the message on the server.

OK i have set up outlook on my PC and will soon do so on my laptop. What i need to try and figure out now is if its possible to set it up in such a way that if i add entries to teh calender, tasks or contacts it makes the same adjustment on my other machine, meaning i dont have to write everything twice.

There is also anothrt slightly annoying thing i just noticed with outlook that i am hoping someone can tell me a way to solve. I noticed that when i click on a folder, be it inbox, trash, spam, whatever, it always opens up an email. Now for inbox this isn't too bad, but if i click on my spam folder to check for false-positives i dont want outlook automaticaly displaying the first spam email to me. I dont mind it showing the sender and subject of each email, but i dont want it to open the email automaticaly. Is there any way to stop this?

Do you mean the preview window?

I assume its the preview window. It can be quite annoying as i just tried to check my RSS feeds, and one of the first feeds that came up displayed a feed which slowed down outlook for a few seconds to a crawl untill it finished loading.

All 3 boxes are unticked, as soon as i go to any folder with mail in it, it still displays whatever mail is at the top of the list.
