Is there a way to output to hdmi and optical at same time on a windows 7 pc? I want to output to my astro wireless mixamp via optical and hdmi to my av receiver so at night I can mute the receaver and use the headset.

If you want to use the same audio for HDMI and optical, then you will need to use Virtual Audio Cable software. Windows can only use one or the other as default.

I doubt that is physically possible without the use of a software. Same goes to Sky box which has both capabilities but not sure if they both function simultaneous.

Thanks Marsman "Virtual Audio Cable software" works but I had trouble setting it up to work with 3 speakers as it only outputted to left and right... I may look into getting a new amp If i could find one that would allow me to output via optical or maybe I will try and use a 3.5 jack if I can get it working.

If you use one or the other, the simplest solution would be to change the default audio playback device in Windows sound properties to which ever you want to use at the time. Only if you want both outputs to play the same audio at the same time, would you need to use VAC. It's also just stereo as you say. There is no other way of doing it, AFAIK.

You can have different audio sources playing. Let's say a game using HDMI and maybe music using SPDIF, as long as the software has options to select a different audio device independent of Windows default. Many media players allow this. Certain games too.
