Over clocking Q6700

Hi all I want to over clock me Q6700 G0 stepping.

my system is

Asus striker extreme first one
Titan fenrar cpu cooler
Q6700 at clock speeds (for now ;))
4gb ram (but in x1 gb sticks :( this may cause issues?)
ATI 4890 1gb

I have read that people get these things to run on air at 3.6Ghz is this right :).

If so could I have a few pointers because the last CPU I over clocked was me socket A cpu many many years ago.

I have owned a number of SE motherboards and they did not like quad core CPU's very much at all. Plus their NB got way to hot. So please be careful with your overclock.
 
I've been playing with my overclock for a while.

On air I got 3.33ghz with 1.35V

On H50 water cooling I'm currently at 3.6ghz with 1.48V.

For now you can try overclocking to 3.33GHZ (333 FSB x 10 multiplier) with 1.35V. At 266/333/400 FSB's it allows the ram to run at 1:1 with the FSB but in my experience it doesn't really make much of a difference whether it's at 1:1 or not. NB Voltage was set to 1.48V on both clocks.

I was running 3.33ghz with the titan fenrir cooler too.

Damn not what I wanted to hear 1Day....well it is but its not good news :P.

I am going to lap me CPU firts as the temps are a little to different between the cores

1 38
2 31
3 31

So a lap may help :) get them a little closer.

EDIT

Is me Q6700 at clock speeds a bottle neck for me ATI 4890 1gb? I know it depends on games and setting I mean generally speaking is it possible its bottle necking me GPU?.

to be honest only lap once you've overclocked and tested with prime95 or IBT. If it's too high for your liking (post results here) then you should consider but the fenrir is a great cooler.

As for bottlenecking, there may be a small bottleneck but once you've overclocked the cpu to 3ghz or beyond there will be no problems at all
 
Hi again.

The thing is I am getting a report of about 8c diff on cores and the lapping fixes that or I hope.

I know the warranty will be void but it all ready is....sorry its not void its expired I think what is the warranty on these? I got it from OCUK cant remember when though.
 
I managed to get my old qx6700 to 3.6 on a 780i striker board. Which striker do you have now?? My current 790i striker gets my q9650 to 4.0 no problems
 
The reason you have such a difference in temp readings has little to do with the level of your IHS or the cooler, but more to do with a) your mount and b) which application you are using to read the temps.

Sorry for not being more optimistic when I replied but I am so not a fan of bullsh1t.

You should be able to overclock your system. That is a given. And if you manage your temps to your NB, more so than with later chipsets from nVidea you will be fine. Take things really easy and slow with your overclocking. The nVidea software that comes with the whole package (good idea to have the latest update) will allow you to do your overclocking in OS. That is handy from a temp monitor point of view. What the 680i was very good at was clocking dual core CPU and memory. I loved what I could do with memory and that board. Oh and of course the only board that did Sli. :D

To recap. Take it slow and do at least 30mins of stress testing at each step up the over clock ladder you go.
Pay attention to your temps.
Pay special attention to the NB temps
Do not lap just yet.
Reseat your CPU before you do that.

That about sorts it I guess.

I want to get a better case before I do as I have no airflow in this one at all.

I have an infra red thermometer so I will stress the PC at std clocks and measure NB temps then OC and see the diff.

What would be a max temp for NB temps?.
 
Let me put things in perspective. I have a scar on my hand from where I burnt myself on the NB of my first Striker motherboard. They get hot. If you are not going to be pushing your memory controller then there should not be any cause for concern.

If I recall correctly the multi for the 6700 is 10X (it has been a long time and I had a E6700 not the Q6700) so you really only want to get a FSB of 360 or if a 9X 400. That should be doable without to much strain on your NB at all. Assuming your CPU can do the business of course.

So if it was me I would set my ram dividers at the most soft of setting. Plus I would set the CPU multi at 6. That being the lower of all your options. And then start to up the FSB. Once you reach the 360/400 then you can start upping the multi on the CPU.

You might find you need to bump up some voltages for the CPU. Your ram should be just fine voltage wise. Once you have the FSB you need to achieve your overclock. Increase one multi at a time and adjust vcore as needed. Let temps guide you as to what is enough vCore.
