Am I right in thinking I have to flash my cards with a 5870 BIOS for this to work?

Is this easy to do?

They both have plenty of headroom.

no, you just need voltage control, honestly its been a while, I think the reference ones and several other later ones from Asus/MSI had voltage control. if you could up voltage with software, getting 1Ghz+ was fairly easy with decent cooling, 900Mhz + on the stock cooler was pretty easy too. Without voltage control I think people had a hard time getting much above 800Mhz.

Probably load up msi afterburner, look on their forums for how to enable unofficial overclocking, add voltage monitoring in settings somewhere(and under the list of things to monitor click to enable voltage monitoring), then see if you can change voltage and if it changes, if you can change it, its probably reference and just see where you can get to.

Figured it out, changed the config file of MSI Afterburner as per:

http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/633816-how-overclock-your-amd-ati-gpu.html

Going to try various clocks and see what difference it makes. I'd like to keep V at default though, unless someone could recommend a safe maximum? They are both at 1087 currently.

EDIT looks like it's keeping card 1 at full core clock all the time rather than stepping down, so I take it 5870 BIOS is the way to go?
