OVERclock best safe speed for i720 ????

thanks mate.

can i ask this, i know years ago this used to be a fact, the fact being that overclocking drasticly reduces the life span of the cpu, is this still the case with these modern cpu's ? i wouldnt like to clock it to say 3.3ghz and the cpu will die in 2 years or summit ?

can i please get an answer to that question, after reading the newbie guides etc it looks as though i7 chips might be protected from shortening thier lifespan due to overclock, is this correct ?

basic u shorten the life of i7 chips if u go crazy on the voltage and heat. that goes for all cpu

very high voltage and heat is what kills cpu's.

ok all you guys , i took your advice and ordered a new cooler, i ordered this one, what ya think >>> "OCZ Gladiator Max CPU Cooler" ?

I was too scared to try and clock just with the stock cooler, lol.

so now that ive ordered the ocz, what very very safe overclock can i get to ??? remember iam the type of person who wants to just set it and leave it and never have to touch it again, so i dont mind dropping down a few levels just so that i can have safe solid stable non-system crashing ,rather than messing around and tinkering with it all the time etc.

Think your going to need a mouning bracket and backplate to mount that cooler onto a i7 chip.

Even with that I would stick to 3.6GHz if you want to set and forget!

u got to understand that every chip is different. we could say 3.5ghz is safe but maybe your chip can't do that.

nobody knows the safe/max overclock for your chip, only u will know..

try this video link for now,i will post some pictures of my bios soon when i have a little more time...

this video link is good for overclockers first time

hmmm, i cant understand that video, how come he dont touch the cpu speeds etc yet the cpu gets overclocked from 2.67 to 3.8 (or whatever it was he says) ??? i cant work that one out, then he kept going on about the ram and i thought maybe hes talking about overclocking the ram rather than the cpu, iam confused, lol.

basically ignore the 1st half of the video...the second half just follow what he says....that is the easiest video that i have found for the p6t...here is another link to help you understand how overclocking works
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx..._id=1&model=P6T+Deluxe&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

in this link there is also a nehalem calculator you can download so you can make youe own adjustments

here is another good thread, with people actually posting there settings in the bios, this thread has over 106 pages full of information!I would say take a look at these then try to drop the voltage, then reboot, test machine see if its stable, remember some cpus take more, some take less volts than others,i did not understand overclocking cpus at all until i read up!The information is out there for you to learn, you just gotta take the time to read and understand and ask questions if you need to :-)

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=205779

i have searched lots of forums on this subject,i beleive this is the best overall thread, the thread at asus is good too

ok, i give up with this, iam confirming myself as a noob at overclocking this cpu in this board, ferckin doing my head in now.

i need to go back to scratch and get some basic advice.

I cant even get the fsb to change from 133 in the bios, lol

also i have noticed that my ram posts in the boot screen as 1066 yet its 1600mhz ram, i cant understand that either .

so my 1600mhz ram posts as being 1066 in boot screen and my i7 920 is running at its default speed of 2.66ghz, and as i say, iam holding my hands up and saying i surrender, lol, iam a cpu bios overclocking noob and i need help, ive been trying to punch above my weight and it aint happening, but they do say god loves a try'r, lol.

can anyone help me please.

p.s
just to add something i have noticed.

I have noticed with this board it has a little switch on it "hardware overclock switch", , i dunno wether to try that or not, hmm, you know anything about it ?? the switch is supposidly to make it easy to overclock so as you dont need to go in the bios and mess around, thats what it says on msi's site anyway, it changes base clock from 133 or 166 or 200, i wonder if its worth giving that a try, ive never even seen anyone else post about it which is very strange.

To add my twopenneth...I found that a simple and effective overclock was to manually input the 20x multiplier, set the BCLK speed to 180, and leave all else on Auto, that has given me a rock solid 3.6GHz on the P6T DeLuxe.

Core i7 920 @ 3.6GHz - P6T DeLuxe - 6GB Dominator 1600 DDR3
2 x 9800GTX+ (SLI) - Akasa Nero H/S - Coolermaster 1000W PSU - Silverstone FT -01 Case

yes mate, but my motherboard is a MSI X58 Platinum ", so i dunno if it would be the same.

Don't know anything about that board I'm afraid.

I would suggest going into the BIOS and setting everything to default. Save & Exit.

Reboot, go into BIOS and look for an option of changing the BCLK - It should be @ 133 defualt (2.66Ghz). Then increase it in small increments (5 or 10), save & exit, test for stability.

Post some pics of your BIOS screens, that might help.

i will get some photos of bios etc now mate, iam just trying to figure out how to save them on photobucket etc and then post them up, so i will brb with some pics as soon as poss.

please keep in mind that the bios doesnt allow me to change things like fsb and voltages etc, you will see from the photos

This is pictures from bios 1001
I am currently using bios 1101

i have exactly the same settings in the new bios 1101,i have found with bios 1101 i can lower my cpu voltage a little more than i had in bios 1001 that you see in the pictures.....

my cpu voltage in bios 1001 in the pictures is 1.375v....but in the bios 1101 that im using now i have it set at 1.350v....its a little lower and gives me the same results and is very stable....1.350v i tried in bios 1001 and it failed to boot into windows
