Would you guys and girls bother to overclock crossfire 7970s? Silly question given the site and all but I am a bit worried over temps getting too high. I am not benchmarking, just gaming so should i just leave them at stock clocks? My bottom card is a ref model so its noisy and I need to crank the fan up to overclock them so if I wont see any real world benefit I don't mind sacrificing a bit power for less noise.

Depends on what resolution you play at, on one or more monitors?

~Short answer - Not worth it.

Unless you're playing at 1600 res or 2+ monitors, you'll easilly hit average 60+fps in nearly every game, at stock !

( I use a 2560x1440, and used to have crossfired 7970's... ended up selling the second, upon deciding a sinlge 7970 oc'd was ample )

Depends how good your cooling is tbh, if you have nice temps then why not?

But realistically, overclocking only gives you a few FPS more, so asking yourself whether or not it's actually worth it is the best bet.

Wise words! I play at 2560x1440 and I found recently that one 7970 just wasn't quite enough tbh.I have a 650d modded case with good cooling but 2 cards kick out a bit heat so I think your right and its probably not worth it.Maybe down the road a bit eh! Thanks :)

I have gone for 1000mhz on the core (maybe 5 degrees increase) and 1450 on the memory. To be honest I see what you mean, they are that powerful its diminishing returns really. Its worth it in the heaven bench but real world gaming you don't notice anything.

I have 2 msi 7970's oc version, I actually downclocked them to 925MHz on the core (was 1010MHz factory oc) to see if i could reduce temps and fan noise. I cannot see any difference in gaming fps tbh but can now run them at 995mV on the cores as opposed to the stock 1170mV which resulted in a 15c temperature drop and the fans only reach around 35% and are very quiet !

So if you want better benchmarks then overclock them more but if not then I actually find them much quieter on lower vcore with little impact on gaming performance :)
