Hi, I have been trying to overclock my Cpu but I keep running into a dead end. I have a 5960x and have been running it at stock settings for a while now but thought I would give overclocking a go. I use 16gb 2666 memory, gigabyte gaming 7 motherboard, phanteks luxe with an AIO cooler. So I tried many settings but I am struggling to get any settings past post. I have tried

XMP ( on and off makes no difference to post ) this sets strap 125
4.1ghz - 4.4ghz ( thought I would get at least the lower end of this ) at between 1.2 - 1.35v, can't get it to boot on any of those voltages.
Uncore 3.5-3.7 (at upto 1.2v) ,
SA ( 0.025 - 0.050 ),
VCCIN ( 1.8-1.9v )

If I touch any settings in the bios relating to overclocking there's no post. What am I missing here guys?

Reset bios to default.

Dont change any settings other than Vcore to 1.325 and memory to XMP.
put you multiplayer up a few bins at a time from stock speed(E.g start at 33 and go up 2x at a time).

Change no other setting until you work out if you chip can even clock
On a 6 core 4Ghz can be max in some cases

I resat bios to default and started at 33x with 1.325v and xmp and no boot. Tried it without XMP and no boot. :(. Makes no sense, temps are great all 20s, ran aida64 last night for 4 hours to ensure I was stable at stock and temps never hit 50.

x30 is stock none turbo speed so should be booting fine. keep vcore at auto and just change multiplayer.

reset to stock and run a stress test, open cpuz and see what vcore it says your using when underload(@stock)

Really strange, I was unable to change any settings because the pc refused to boot, so I tried changing CPU Upgrade option in bios to 4.3 and its booted and is using 1.25v for 4.3ghz which is fine isn't it? very odd that it won't let me touch the settings myself.

Is your bios upto date?? If its ok at 4.3 with 1.25 its likely to be able to do more.
Just resetting to defaults and using xmp everything on auto you should be good upto 4.4ghz, run something like asus real bench for stabillity, (just run the benchmark test)
Have cpuz open and core temp or similar to keep an eye on volts/temps, keep 80c as your max, once at 44x, check voltage required and enter that manually and try 45x at same voltage

Yeah I am on the latest bios. Unable to touch the bios at all so im lucky the CPU Upgrade has worked. Won't boot with any other setting touched in bios, not even XMP alone. CPU Upgrade is the only setting that works.

Sorry for late reply, no I haven't tried more than the 4.3 but I have had no issues whilst on 4.3 with upgrade.Might try a little more later. Hard to understand why I can't touch any other options in the bios though.

I find this really odd that you can't even set XMP but Cpu Upgrade works. If its using 1.25v and is stable your pretty much set. but I would try the next option up on Cpu Upgrade. Might be 4.5ghz I think. If it keeps the voltage low enough you might get lucky.

I will try the next one up later after the football and see how it goes. It's really odd that I can't touch other options in the bios, I wonder if 8pack would know why?

Well guys I had to post this to 8 pack because the CPU Upgrade was actually not stable, so I will post the same thing here in the hope someone sees this and has an idea. This is a more indepth bit about my issue

Hi I am hoping you can shed some light on why I can't overclock my 5960x in the bios. My system specs are -

i7 5960x
gigabyte gaming 7 X99
16gb ddr4 Avexir 2666
980ti
SSD's only
Corsair AIO cooler gentle typhoons

Now the problem I get is I can't change any settings in my bios to do with overclocking other than CPU Upgrade, which is clearly not what I should be using.
Setting XMP alone doesn't boot, setting XMP with a core voltage of upto 1.3v or more doesn't boot either.
I have tried settings such as -

Core clock - 35 - 43 ( all the way upto 1.35v No boot )
SA (0.025 - 0.075) no boot
Uncore (auto/33-38, no boot)
VCCIN (1.8-1.9,no boot)
Leaving all settings on default apart from XMP doesn't boot.

I have ran memtest and tested the pc with no faults found, so I am really lost here, not sure what I am doing wrong. I was hoping someone with your expertise may have an idea so I don't have to use stock speeds or CPU Upgrade. (which I now know isn't stable)

Also to add I installed the gigabyte overclock software to see if that works, and when it sets XMP and restarts the PC wont boot. So I have to remove XMP and boot up with stock again. I might try and reseat the memory and remove the chip for a minute. Really odd this.

I am on bios F8C

Thanks David

Ok I just went into the bios and changed the view to the classic view. Now here I tried

Memory XMP 2666
43x @ 1.28v core
SA 0.100 (is this too much)
VCCIN (I think its called, from 1.8 to 1.9)

Now its booted, how odd.

Update with this guys-New bios installed which I thought I was already on, but clearly I wasn't. XMP works much better no hassle with this bios.

Tested 42x @ 1.3v / XMP / 100 bclk nothing else touched. This passed 5 hours Aida64. Should I try for more and should I touch the uncore ratio, SA or other settings?
I went straight in at 1.3v so I can reach my multi and then work my way down.
