Hi I just overclocked my I7 920 to 4GHZ all was stable on prime95, however when I push the power switch to boot up pc, the pc will start up for a few sec's them shut down then start up like normal.

Is this normal when overclocked, this does not happen when CPU is at stock speed.

I7 920
Rampage Extreme 2
12Gb Mem

No it should not be doing that, most likely the motherboard doesn't like some setting that has been changed. How long did you run Prime 95 for?

Seems like an unstable overclock and the motherboard reseting itself back to stock settings (unstable overclock recovery). Ideally need to run Prime95 for 4-8 hours to make sure it's stable, an hours really isn't long enough.

Are you turning the system of at the mains plug as well as via start? Some asus boards perform a double boot if this is the case. But as above, run prime for a bit longer, or intel burn test or LinX. 20 passes of either of the latter with maximum ram selected. Also post up the settings and voltages youve got set, ram timings etc.

Yes I am, this does not happen if I do not turn off the mains. only when I turn off mains at night. when back from work I switch mains back on boot up pc.

100% sure its ram settings esp with 12gb,what dram bus voltage and qpi/vtt or integrated memory controller voltage? cant remember what asus call it

could be cold boot issue, once warm its fine?

This is a feature built into a few asus boards, happened on my p5q deluxe. Anytime power was removed at the wall, or changes in the ai oc menu in bios were made, it performed a dual boot. This was with two rock solid prime stable intel quads, (q6600 + q9550). If you want to check the stability of your oc, you ideally need to run prime95 a bit longer than an hour. The two programs i mentioned above are quicker to use, but i tend to use all three. Is your 12gb of ram in a 3x4 or 6x2 config? As more ram will place a lot more strain on the cpu memory controller, which in turn requires an increase in qpi voltage.

Ive never seen it on my p6t deluxe v2 or my p6 x58 de. Though ive never had either switched off at the wall tbh. 12gb in the spec in sig, (3x4gb), 6gb in the p6 x58.
