I currently have abit il9 pro 1066FSB
http://www.abit.com.tw/page/en/moth...&pPRODINFO=Specifications&fSEARCHTEXT=IL9 Pro

with LGA775 E2160 800FSB 1.8GHz
http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=29739

I need some more processing power and was going to buy LGA775 E6500 1066FSB 2.7GHz
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-321-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567

But then I think.... I'm on an overclocking site, maybe I don't need to buy a new processor.

So can I get more from my current cpu instead ?

PS. my memory is geil 800Mhz GX22GB6400UDC, so will that need replacing anyway?

thanks

From a quick search it seems you could probably get a 1Ghz+ overclock on that CPU but I've no idea how or what RAM and Motherboard you'd need to achieve that.

If you do have to replace RAM and Motherboard then it's probably not going to be worth your while bothering to overclock it anyway.

That board wont support overclocking in the bios, you can do a software overclock and it should be a good software overclock as your board does support voltage changes
That chip by all accounts should hit 3GHz, a software overclock would get you up to 2.6Ghz I would imagine

Edit: Nothing wrong with your RAM buddy

That's right. I had an aBit motherboard and the software they provide was actually quite comprehensive as regards overclocking, it even had a few presets. You can't beat BIOS tweaks though.

OK. So it looks promising, I'd better read those guides in a bit more detail.

The chip was lowish spec when I bought it because I wanted a quiet PC, I've got a big heatsink with a fan that rarely comes on. So I should be OK for cooling.

Thanks!
Even if I don't end up overclocking, it was a good job I asked the question, because I didn't know to check compatibiity. I've now got a list of old processors to look for on eBay.

I just downloaded cpu-z.

memory tab says: 332.5MHz, FSB:DRAM 3:5

And then I got a shock, slot1,3 has PC2-6400, but slot2,4 has PC2-5300.

I recently bought 2 extra sticks of '6400' they are in the retail box, the speed is only shown by a blue dot stuck on the retail box. Looks like I might have been conned.

So, in relation to my previous question before as well, have I got a memory problem or is 332.5the correct speed for my motherboard and everything is OK ?

Sounds like the RAM is running at 665Mhz.

It sounds like your board doesn't run RAM faster than 667, unless they added support with a BIOS update but didn't reflect changes on the page you linked.

Faster RAM will work but it just wont be able to run at the faster speeds.

Thanks. That's what I thought.

So (ignoring the software overclocking) I only have one easy upgrade, that's upping the cpu speed from 1.8 to 2.4/2.6/2.66. And I don't need to worry about memory speed or FSB speed.

Thanks for all the help. Probably saved me a few quid in useless purchases.
