Not built a system for 10+ years and never overclocked one.
Looking at now building a new system with Q6600 and want to overclock it to 3Ghz or so as my other choice is the E8500.
I can understand the basics of overclocking the CPU but I am getting lost in all the technical stuff regarding memory timings, CAS Latency, voltages etc and the effect it has and what I would need to set and why.
I have looked at the Asus P5Q board as my choice but not sure with memory do I need PC6400 or PC8500?

Should I just leave the system as it stands when I build it or is it all relatively easy to pick up?

On another note, just to get things up and running, is just a matter these days of plugging all the parts together and switching on, or do you still need to configure BIOS/jumpers just to get boot up?

CAS latency is also referred to as memory timings, it's the time it takes in miliseconds for the memory to respond to tasks(I think) PC8500 would be faster for that board. Sometimes the cpu needs more power to reach higher clocks and that's when you up the voltages, but not too much, as it can kill your card.

The new custom PC has an excellent build guide for newbies....

Regards overclocking do your homework before playing in the BIOS.......most settings can be left well alone when overclocking especially for the 1st time!

Thanks both for the replies.
which issue of Custom PC is the article in as there is a new issue next week?
Not sure if you're getting that early as a subscriber?

Your choice of CPU all depends on what you want from it - for games i would choose the E8600 E0 and for windows / vid encoding etc i would probably get the Q6600 - although the newer chips don't clock as well as some of the older G0's.

The OCing guide (sticky) within this forum is really good. Also, refer to the specific mobo threads - i.e., the official P5Q Mobo thread.
