Really Bad Chip?

ive managed to adjust some settings in the bios to run a 4.2ghz overclock on my 4670k. whenever im using prime to test it CPUz only shows the clock at 3.8ghz

anyone have any ideas?

so after some extensive testing i either have a non overclockable chip or my motherboard is just rubbish.

i have the Gigabyte Z87M-D3H motherboard and a 4670k, anything above stock clocks and i need to set volts to 1.25v at that voltage i get the issue in my post above.

whats the deal with the intel overclock warranty? anyone used it or know what its about, my understanding is that if you have a bad chip you can pay $20 to get another (although you may have the same issues it gives you another shot at getting a better one)

i bought my chip in october last year from here and have just tried to overclock it last week.

I left a comment in your other thread regarding helping you out as I have same CPU/Mobo. I had mine all the way up to 4.8/9Ghz for benchies.

Make sure you have latest Bios, CPU-Z up to date along with Core Temp.

Reset back to default settings and try this.

Manually set CPU Vcore to 1.25.
Change CPU Clock Ratio to 45
Change CPU Vrin Loadline Calibration to Extreme.
Leave BLCK & Turbo Boost on Auto.
Dont apply any XMP profiles (if any) for your RAM. Leave it at stock.

Try booting with this. If you make it to windows than carry out some tasks, I don't like stress testing with Prime as its not realistic for everyday use but its up to you. If you BSOD than just restart enter bios again.

Increase Vcore by 0.01 to 1.26 and boot again to test. Make sure to watch temps while under load.

Edit: What cooler are you running ?

no you got the right cpu and motherboard pal

did you turn off turbo boost at all?

ive tried with boost off and boost on, it doesnt seem to make a difference.

you sure you have the Z87M and not the Z87X

i have everything up to date.

as far as those settings go, ive tried them and the work with a 4.2ghz clock but CPU-Z shows it @3.8ghz when at full load and not the full 4.2ghz overclock (my LLC setting is either low, medium, high or turbo so i set turbo)

if i set my multiplier at anything above stock (well 3.8ghz is the lowest ive tried) unless i set my vcore to 1.25 it wont boot into windows. but i hit mid 80's when using prime so surely i dont want to be upping my voltage any more?

im using a h100 as my cooler, idle temps are mid 30's.

does it still read the same if you try to underclock it to 3.5 ?

try downloading hwinfo (32 or 64 bit version) and see if that reads the same as cpu-z

how long does it take to hit mid 80's under prime ?

will it boot if you have llc on low or medium along with the 1.25 vcore ?
