hi all just wandering how best to overclock my cpu as i am thinking of getting corsair h2o cooler and an antec 1200 for better cooling, i have had it to 3ghz but temps went up too high, my system is

q6600
4 gig ddr2 pc2 5300 ( 2 x 2gig )
gigabyte ep45 ds3r

any other info needed just let me know, would appreciate any help.

If your CPU is the later 90w version you should be able to do 3ghz pretty easily. I did it on air with a tuniq tower. That and I have 8gb of ram at 1ghz so it's can't be hard!

how do i know that, cpu-z reports it as q6600 stepping 7 revision b3, also was hoping on water i could get 4ghz, trying to justify overclocking this as opposed to going i7 as i have a big fat cheque coming in 8 weeks, if i can o/c this then i wont be able to justify a new rig, possibly anyway.

I suggest upping the voltage on the cpu a touch then try running your multi at 8 and your fsb at 1600. That would give you 3.2. I had a q6600 and it was the same b3 stepping as yours. It maxed out at 3.6 even under my h50. To get that i used an 8 multi and 1700 fsb. Hope this helps.

He's running DDR2 5300 memory. Which if my maths serves, on a 1:1 divider, would hit max frequency at 9x333fsb - 3ghz. So he wont want to be running 8x400.

Most memory will overclock even if you have to manually lower the timings and/or increase the voltage.

ok cheers for the pointers, so i might need faster ram then, thats no problem, will get some along with a case and cooler.
