Hi,

I just recently got my hands on the following CPU Q9550 and am having trouble overclocking it at all.

I am pretty sure its all down to my ram. I had this issue with my E6750 not overclocking once I upgraded to 4gb ram.

I have a Gigabyte 965P-S3 motherboard on bios F14 and my ram is 2 x 2gb CORSAIR XMS2 ddr2 800mhz on stock volts 1.8 and timings 5-5-5-18.

The overclock will not hold no matter what i do with volts / setting etc. I must be missing something stupid.

When i increase my FSB to overclock the CPU my ram increases also. Now the bios say in blue the default of the ram is 800, but with my new Quad and old duo the ram always sits a 667, but thats cuz i am having to leave the CPU on stock.

On increasing the CPU the ram increase and I think thats why it fails on reboot.

Does anyone have this setup and know how I can unlink or set my ram so it works on overclocking CPU (timing, volts, ratio etc).

What other settings are you changing? Are you just changing the FSB & leaving everything else as is?

With regards to the RAM, if the BIOS has it sat at 667 when the CPU is at stock then you should quite a bit of headroom to keep it linked 1:1 & up the FSB until the RAM is running at it's recommended speed. Are you sure the RAM only needs 1.8v? Mine takes 2v to run at it's quoted speed & I'm giving it 2.1v for my overclock...

I'm no OC'ing guru & I have no experience with your board so I can't really help you much more than that...

Thanks for the reply:

Having increased my FSB i also increased the volts to the DDR2 OverVoltage Control by +0.2, FSB OverVoltage Control by +0.1 and set the PCI Express Frequency to 100 but still no joy!

Do they need more volts? or do other settings need some also like: PCI-E OverVoltage Control or MCH OverVoltage Control?

Think my ram volts a recommended between 1.8v and 2.1v
