I just installed some new parts into my girlfriends computer.

The parts i added are a

E4700 core 2 duo
4gb corsair xms 1066mhz ram
asus p5q motherboard.

Upon boot the cpu is running at speed 2.40ghz (should be 2.60) but the ram is only running at 800mhz.

I'm unable to make the ram run at the rated speed. I can only seem to get it to run at 1066mhz if i bump up the fsb to 266, which puts the cpu at 3.4ghz and its not stable at this speed.

Forgotten all about overclocking on socket 775, i was hoping for a slight overclock of the cpu without touching the voltage 3-3.2ghz is plenty.

Any suggestions?

I'm using auto settings, i need to know the best timings to use really for the cpu-fsb-memory etc.

im looking for 3-3.2ghz with memory running at 1066 if possible, if not 800 will do.

It seems to be stable at 3.2ghz until i up the ram to 1066mhz. 800mhz is fine, 1066mhz results in a bsod during intel burn test.

What do i need to increase? Ive got the ram running at correct voltage + timings.

these are the settings im using but im unable to run the ram at 1066 otherwise i get bsod in intel burn test. 800mhz +cpu overclock stable in intel burn test.

settings

cpu 266fsb strap x12multi =3.2ghz

cpu does have a x13 multi but i settled for 3.2ghz for now.

Yeah 5-5-5-18 timings.

Ram is

CPU is stable at 3.2 running intel burn @800mhz ram speed its only when i bump the ram up to 1066 that i get a bsod.

CPU vcore is auto but seems to be around 1.288-1.312.

If it's your gfs pc, might as well leave it at 800MHz? Probably won't notice the difference? You may be able to use much lower Vcore than auto with 775, the motherboards always used way too much vcore for my liking. I would try setting it manually at 1.280V and see if it is stable and then maybe try 1.2790V etc, less heat and power consumption for her.

My 1.34V Q6600 the motherboard set it at 1.43V Auto. >_< Had bad vdroop too, was actually 1.28V under load.

Yeah i guess i could leave it, very hard to tell the difference no doubt.

It just irks me though, know what i mean? :D

She had a E2180 before, stock around 2ghz but was running @2.67ghz, the strange thing was i could run that at 266fsb and the ram at 1066 no problems without touching anything. Just left it all auto.

Any idea what the stock voltage is for a E4700?

Even with the ram at 2.2V in BIOS? If you check PC Health Status in BIOS to make sure the ram voltage is correct, also check in windows under load using something like HWMonitor. If voltage drops under load, can cause BSOD.

I'll double check tomorrow but sure i tried earlier with 2.2volts set and before that 2.1, made no difference.

Could fsb voltage/northbridge voltage need a bump? Would seem strange with only 2 sticks of ram in.

I dont think its possible to run the cpu at stock speed 2.6ghz with the ram at 1066 because of the fsb strap. To run the ram at 1066 the fsb must be 266 minimum.

If i reset everything to default cpu is running at 200fsbx13=2.6ghz but the ram is then at 800speed max, to get ram up to 1066 i up the fsb to 266 and lower the multi to x12 and then have the ram at 1066. I suppose i could try the multil at x13 but that would take the cpu up to 3.4ghz.

Well shes using it now so i wont be able to play around with it until tomorrow when shes at work.

I just had to get it stable (and i did) in time for when she got home. :p

Will have another bash at getting the ram at full speed tomorrow.

Corsair are lifetime warranty aren't they, and they do RMA if you can't run them at 1066 5-5-5-15. :D

Those sticks have EPP, Enhanced Performance Profiles, old version of XMP I am guessing, can you not enable EPP? :) It's good ram!

Maybe, i dont recall seeing an option for it in the P5Q bios though?

Might be in the ai overclock menu, have you tried the other fsb-nb strap settings Matt? Had a p5q deluxe, found that with 1066mhz ram, running 333mhz fsb-nb strap allowed the memory to run a bit higher than 800mhz, albeit that was with a q6600 and a q9550, (3.8ghz on each cpu) both needed a fair bit of tweaking of pll, nb and fsb-termination voltages

Thanks setter ill try tomorrow.

I think the P5Q is a little bit gimped on the voltage front, i know its missing some voltages which the Deluxe version has.

I could run the fsb at 333 but id have to lower the cpu multiplier a fair bit id imagine to leave the volts at stock.

Why on earth are you overclocking your girlfriends pc, she'll get her shopping/browsing done faster, unless she enjoys the battlefield too??

Lol, i dunno bad habbit i guess. I like to get a free overclock if i can.

I want her to enjoy sims 3 at full quality 1080p. :p

I recently added one of ocuk's 60gig OCZ sata 2 ssd's+a palit 3850 (256mb) to her system so its actually nipping along quite nicely now.
