overclock x2 4000 vs E6400

They would be on pretty much level pegging.

With the X2 @ 2.4 they would be pretty even @ 2.6 it would nudge ahead slightly and @ 2.8 well slightly more better, but you might struggle to pull 2.8 out of it.
All in all pretty much equal.
 
I think AMD get a hard time these days on forums etc. OK so they not as fast as C2D but a lot of the time its not as big a gap as some people like to think. Overall with the cost of the CPU and motherboard (have you checked these recently? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=5&subid=805 ) they are a very viable option for many people. Also if gaming is your main use, the CPU comes second to the graphics card. OK a faster CPU will push things along quicker but it wont make a world of difference like a GFX card can, unless you are going from one extreme to the other.
