overclocked 970 good for 2k?

Go for the best you can afford.

yes the new NVidia card will be out soon, along with the new AMD 300 series which shouldn't be discounted, just as the current 290's shouldn't which can be had at a very good price at the moment. ( this of course all depends on what your definition of soon is :))

I don't think I've ever heard 1440p referred to as 2K, not that it matters though :p

A 970 might have some issues at 1440p in a couple of years due to its VRAM limitation, you'd probably get an extra year out of a 980 I think. A 980 would also be a better option if you ever want to go SLI (again because of the 970s VRAM issue).

Normally I would agree with that but the GTX 980 makes me far more cautious.

It's so totally not worth the money in any shape or form. Many people have bought them as the best they can afford and they're going to realise it was a mistake when that 4gb starts to creak.

Yes the gtx 980 is a good card but it's at a rip off price would never buy one even second hand prices are stupid high. I'm waiting to see what price the 980 Ti will be around £650 I bet which is a lot but should have 6 GB vram so better for gaming at 1440p an would last me a few years.
Wouldn't buy the 970 price is ok but only good for 1080p in my opinion.

If £500 bought you an 8gb variant then I would be completely happy to endorse it.

The issue is once VRAM runs out it doesn't matter how fast your card is it will run like turd.

I needed a card for a ITX build recently and ended up hunting down a Titan Black. It's only around 5-10% slower than the 980 but has an extra 2gb.
