My friend brough his pc round last night to try out some Overclocking on his machine (mine was used to check out overclocking articles online so we weren't flying blind)
He's running a Winchester 3000 with 1GB Corsair Value Select PC3200 CAS 2.5 (I know, not great for clocking) on an MSI Nforce 4 K8N-F (the one without a Firewire port)

Dropped the HTT to 3, set the memory at 166 and upped it to 222 = 2ghz without to much trouble. Booted to windows and Prime95 ran for 2 hours with no errors. The core is up at 1.48 - 49 according to CPU-Z

We're both happy with the result, temps are all fine under his Freezer 64 (38 - 39 idle) but I'm wondering if we can go much further with this RAM? Havent tried yet, but it's running up at 200mhz again since upping the clock of the CPU
Might be tempted to try it on my SD 3700 if the RAM can take it (corsair Value again, DDR400)

i've read on her that these chips chould make 2.3 - 2.4 ghz

Ram is definetly the limit factor, like you im running a preety crap ram setup, a mixture of geil ultra and corsair xmscpt2.
I've got a venice 3200 and I overclocked to 240X10 ht of 4 which worked fine, for some reason i couldnt get to 250 without nothing working, I suspected it was ram even though I was running it at a divider of 2/3 so well below the 200, so I ran just the geil ram alone - now Im on 260X10 with ram at 5/6 setting so running at around 216, but once again the ram is now limiting me - and any overclock I get if I put the ram at 2/3 now isnt worth it as it wont perform better because the rams running slower.
I still havent found the max overclock of my cpu yet so i'll drop the ram down to 2/3 and see how far I can go with the cpu - and if it overclocks rather well (which it already has) I might be tempted to buy some good ram that can run at a 1:1 ratio.

Just what I was thinking :) The memory will be the limiting factor. I dont want to increase voltage to it at all in case we end up killing it. Likewise with upping the speed too much.
We'll leave it at 2ghz for the time being :p

How strange.. im running a Winchester 3000, on a MSI Nforce 4 K8N ;) Ive clocked mine up to 2.4ghz. It did go up to 2.5ish, but it failed prime at that speed. Im having to run my ram on a 100divider, as ive only got pc2700(I know :( ), but even at reasonable spees, my ram didnt like any of the other dividers at all. So now im running at 300x8, with my ram at 150mhz.

Yeah my ram doesnt seem to like some of the dividers, I really wish i had some quality ram and could run it at 1:1 - imagine how powerfull it would be + what fsb i could reach.

dont worry too much. your not missing anything major. a64's love tight timings, ram speed isnt all that important. stick to some decent pc3200 and use the dividers - my opteron doesnt complain about my GEIL PC3200:)

very true, no real need for the extra bandwidth :)

Hm you said 38-39 idle

My venice 3000 on a freezer 64 pro, is at 29 idle, and 38 underload.... also its at 2.45ghz (3800 speeds)

At 1.450v too - Edit

I cant seem to use a divider when I run over 250htt with a mixture of geil and corsair ram, so I've only got the geil on by itself now just finding max cpu.

Ive been doing a bit of tweaking. My ram is still at 150mhz. I did try pushing the HTT up to 342mhz, with the cpu multiplier at 7, so as to get the ram speed up a bit, but my mobo's max HTT seems to be around 315mhz. Instead, ive managed to get the ram running at 1T, 2,3,3,6. To be honest im not really up on memory timings, so im not sure how great that is, but its certainly skimmed 3 seconds off my superpi 1 mill score.

Yeah thats a good timing., do you think its worth me not running my chip at 270X10, rather put the multiplier down to around 7X and run a much higher htt?

Actually I cant even do that with my mixture of ram, I will have to do it once I get better ram.

messiah whats your super pi time 1m?

36 seconds at 240X10 with dual channel memory @ 200.
Single channel memory at 270X10 ram @ 180 = 36 seconds lol - As you can see ram is bloody important.
I wonder what I would get with Dual channel ram at 1:1 ratio at 270.

LOL cheers mate, i'll probably get around 30 secs then if I had decent memory @5/6 or 28 and less at 1:1 im guessing.
What are your ram timings btw? And are you using Geil Value?

for 30s you need to be running ~2.8ghz at least on a winchester i would have thought...28s was with a 3ghz opty dont forget lol.

Yeah its GEIL value, running 2.5,3,3,6:)

I heard that only makes a 2-5% difference? Sayint that 2-5% difference could amount to around 1/2 seconds on super pi.
i was about to buy a opteron but I already bought this.
