Maybe 5-6 hours at a time at 100% a few times a week (3d rendering)

Will it possibly damage it?

Going to order a 3930k system (overclocked to 4.2, water cooled) to replace my current i7 920 system (not overclocked)

Basic question is just that I notice that the CPU whist rendering is working 100% for however long the render / animation takes, over time does it run the risk of damage? Big fear giving the cost of the CPU?

Nope. As long as the volts are kept below 1.35V (in an ideal world, but 1.37V is acceptable at good temps) and the temps are reasonably good (below 70C in an ideal world), then that's fine. You could run it 24/7 if you wanted :) If it's coming from OcUK overclocked and under water then you'll be fine for both of those conditions.

No, don't freak out over this. This is what computers are built for, sustained lengths of period doing millions of calculations. The 3930k will oblitorate tasks like this for breakfast though !

If there are no bluescreens, and no errors in memory - then you're good to go and completely stable.

CPU's are designed to be stressed, as long as you keep the voltage and temperature within safe thresholds it won't be a problem.

There's an argument that your motherboard might last a bit longer if you don't stress it much but by the same token it will last longer still if you never actually switch it on and do things with it. :p

Unfortunately no cpu is fast enough when you're into rendering :(
I'm trying to locate a 2nd hand i7-970 but they seem to be very rare; I might end up getting the ivy 3770k.

Get that i7 920 OC it to 4.0GHz and keep the volts under 1.35, my i7 920 has been at 4.2GHz for nearly 4 years. As long as your cooling is descent you should have no problems.
