Hey,
I spent all day overclocking my CPU and hopefully i will have something to show for it... shame i still need to run orthos agen.. only ran it for hour and a half then decided to overclock my gfx card. End result should be sweet and get some extra points when folding :D.

I got 3.3 but wasnt orthos stable. Voltage was too low i think...
mines 3.2 stable just over stock (whatevers the next up from stock on the DS4) so if you're able to do it (ram etc) then 3.3 shouldn't require much more.

Don't be scared about giving it some voltage, provided cooling is good.

I'm so used to watercooling, I forget that people have issues keeping processors under 38 load :D

lol
I was tempted to try and port my old Maze 3 watercooling setup to core2duo but tbh I CBA!

Should go for it. I'm never going to use air again. Noisy, not nearly as cool, gets full of dust (the rad does need dusting occasionally). Hopefully will last a while too. The block is socket 775 compatible, just trying to decide whether to go c2d now or later :(

Two things:

1: Doesn't matter when you get a C2D. Just buy one when you can afford it :D

2: How does one overclock a C2D? I have yet to find a decent guide on thar t'internet. I know the basics but I'm the sort of person who wants to know every last detail.

from what I can see its more like overclocking a Athlon XP than athlon 64s
up the FSB!

Was pretty simple imo, i found it harder overclocking my X1950XT most should do 690 on the core at stock volts but i kept getting artifacts so i had to punch it up to 1.4750 and a fair bit on the memory to get a 45Mhz OC on that :(. Although there is no real X1950XT overclocking tools or support atm not even real driver support. My card still shows up a generic in 3D mark with the latest drivers. Although this OC gave me a whole lot of extra point in 3D mark. Its orthos stable, i ran it for just under 13 hours :D. Temps stay at about 55... Wouldnt mind a better cooling slution the Scythe ninjas seem to do a good job, or is it the tuinqs ? ;)

First overclocking was on AMD 64s. Never even owned an Athlon XP.

I understand upping the FSB is the way to go but I want to know how things affect each other and blah blah blah. Put it this way, I read through the entirety of the ShortMedia 939 OCing guide twice before I did it for real :D

If you are running the GPU then turn it off before playing games - it will cripple you assuming it doesnt automatically get turned off.

The CPU client stays switched on during gaming. I have a dual core CPU and lots of RAM so I generally don't notice any performance drop. Even when I ran two CPU clients I rarely noticed any negative impact.

Try it for yourself and see. You can write [or download] your own little shortcut that will stop the service and start it up again when you are done should you find you prefer the clients switched off during gaming.

I find that most games run fine with F@H in the background, even with a single-core CPU. The one exception I've found is Call of Duty, which only seems to get 10% CPU time when F@H is running and so runs really slowly until you turn folding off.

Lol check the overclocking section of the forums?
See: Beginners Guide To Overclocking

Yeah I have seen that, and it taught me the basics, but I want the ins and outs. If you see how in-depth this article is you will understand the kind of guide I am after :D [if you have a quick look at the drop-down menu with the contents you'll see how detailed it is]

Still, I am sure I can get by with the basics, and I can always prod one of you lot.

That's a pretty nice guide!

I generally find experimentation to be the most interesting way to overclock anyway - see what works and what doesn't. You might get a few more blue screens that way, but it's generally nothing that can't be fixed by a CMOS reset at the most :p
