Hi

I have my Core I7 overclocked to 3.33ghz, I have heard rumors about overclocked pc's needing to be plugged into main socket in the wall and not an plug extension (10 plugs in one)

Is this true, and am I damaging my PC by plugging it into an extension

Thanks

Hay

It's an ideal but not a necessity - it usually gets mentioned if someone’s experiencing cold boot problems or other instabilities that can't be explained.

If your system is stable and you’re not experiencing any cold boot issues then your extension cable isn't a 'possible' cause for concern. It certainly won’t be damaging your PC if it's wired and functioning correctly.

The only thing i will add is that it's wise to have a good quality lead if you need to use one.

I do sometimes get cold boot problems, where i turn it on and it goes off a second later, but then restarts itself back up and continues to boot ok.

Also I get a ticking problem every so offen, when I load something it won't come up, then a tick noice comes from the case and it loads sraight after that

Could that be because I have it plugged into an extension??

This seems to be an issue with a lot of X58 mobos, both of my UD5's have this problem where after they have been off for a while, or if I have switched them off at the socket, or pulled the plug out for any reason, when I goto turn it on, it will power up, fans spin for about 2 seconds, then it will shutdown again, and then fireup all by itself, and then it will boot into windows perfectly fine..

I asked Gigabyte about this, and was told by them that it is normal.

I personally have never experienced this with any other board in the past.

::edit::

And my rig is plugged directly into the wall socket, not an extension lead.

I have had this before on my old p35 board. It is probably a pre-boot hardware check, it can be turned off in the bios on some motherboards.

I was told by overclockers support it was normal too, but i'm wondering if plugging it into the wall will stop the ticking, and the delayed loading until the it ticks, not all the time though

I was warned when I got my asus p6t board that I might experience cold boot problems as they had in the shop I bought it from. (Touch wood) nothing after 5 months though
