Hi all,

Im thinking of building the following system but have a couple of questions and hoped someone might be able to answer them:

CPU = Intel I7 3820k
Motherboard = Asus P9X79 PRO
Case = Coolmaster HAF X (RC-942)
Case Fans = X2 Red Megaflow 200 silent fan (Top Fans)
GPU = Nvidia GTX580 - EVGA
OS = Windows 7 Pro
Ram = DDR3 corsair Vengeance Black 1600mhz Quad Channel - (Total 16GB)
CPU Cooler = Thermalright Silverarrow
HDD = Standard 7200rmp
SSD = Crusial M4 128GB
PSU = Corsair AX1200w
Overclock = 3.6ghz - 4.0ghz
Optical Drive = DVD Re-writer x22
Fan Controller = ???

1. Im wondering does anyone know of any good fan controllers that also looks good ? As all the controllers I've seen, seem to have major problems in reviews. E.I. the clock resets every time the computer turns off or breaks after a couple of months.

2. Also wondering what is the best motherboard between Asus P9X79 and the pro version for reliability ? Also is there a better motherboard in this price range that can hold this CPU and 64gb ram ?

3. Also if the CPU was overclocked could it hold better ram in terms of Mhz to make it future proof ? As it currently can hold 1600mhz but wondering could it hold 2100mhz if overclocked ?

4. Lastly is there such a thing as a case neon controller, two switch between a red light system and a blue ? If so where can these be found ?

THANKS IN ADVANCE
DAVID LYON M.A.

4) The OcUK coldcathodes come with switches that look like (although I aint tried withy mine yet) that they will fit in the holes in the back of a case for external rads. just turn one off and the other on.

2) Gigabyte have a UK RMA base, which is useful:

Or this MSI comes with a free cooler/game for the same price:

3) You can overclock RAM yes, look at this RAM for that :)

See the thread here about it:

What's your total budget? That's a might expensive PSU for just one 580, you could get a cheaper one and a 680 instead?

The reason for choosing an extreme power supply is to make it future proof for when i upgrade.

The reason for choosing the 3820 is the price its so similar, also Im thinking at a later date putting 64gb ram into the motherboard. As for some of the parts you have mentioned Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler the Thermalright Silverarrow is getting better benchmarks.

Fair enough. I'd still recommend that RAM [if you want to OC it], that PSU and that GPU :)

The Silverarrow isn't on OcUK atm it seems, so I just added something similar

Fair enough, appreciate the suggestion :)

So if i overclock the cpu could it take the 2100mhz ram ? Also what happened if i didnt overclock it would it be capped by the CPU at 1600 ?

Cheers

No you can OC RAM without OCing the CPU.

Also, check stulid's spec above he usually knows better than me how to balance it all :)

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can OC the RAM without OCing the CPU.

I don't mean to imply you shouldn't OC the CPU though, because you should anyway ;)

I was under the impression that if the CPU wasn't quick enough it couldn't handle that range in mhz. Will look into it..

I think you're probably right, but when you can overclock the memory speed without overclocking the core speed of the CPU? But of course there is some limit to this depending on the CPU. Not something I know an awful lot about!

Is great

you may not need a fan controller as ASUS suite should allow you to create profiles for cpu and chassis fans, i.e. fan speed vs temperature.
Also, why not take up the Samsung ram that could overclock to 2400MHz (mostly) although it is rated at 1600MHz? check on the other link on this forum. I'll put a link later.

Could anyone confirm that the asus suite has this capability ? As after reading many reviews on fan controllers they seem to have loads of problems.

Also the reason for the choosing corsair ram is that the latency values are lower than the samsung.
