Yes these are pricey however ALL stock is 100% official with full warranty offered from manufacturer unlike many drives in the market at moment that could well be grey import without the warranty as stated.

Besides the longer warranties they are supposed to have high reliability and are recommended for RAID arrays, not sure what else.

Their service life on them is much longer. iirc the platters are constantly spinning to avoid the start stop which potentially degrades the life of the drive.

Hi there

The WD VelociRaptor have 1yr because were selling grey drives, this means the stock is none EU and has a lesser warranty but the cost to buy in is substancially less.

Were just advertising them correctly, many competitors buy grey but leave the warranty the same when it is infact far less as the manufacturer won't deal with the warranty.
 
Enterprise drives properly support RAID controllers (Let you configure TLER etc).

I am using 'consumer' HDDs and after much research have only just found out TLER (SCT Error Recovery on a Seagate) is NOT configurable. This plays havoc with RAID controllers and is one of the primary reasons why HDDs can drop off RAID volumes.

It's a shame this problem is not well known. Consumer grade HDDs are not suitable for consumer grade RAID implementations - It's ridiculous.

The old WD drives woudl let you configure TLER which effectively made them enterprise level drives without the warranty but WD has since locked it down, as have other manufacturers. It's a shame as these options, afaik, are part of the ATA standard and the feature sets are being intentionally crippled in order to force people into enterprise level kit for even consumer applications.

Without being able to configure the TLER timeout to something below what a RAID controller expects to wait drives will drop from RAID volumes. If the disk stalls past the max time the RAID controller will wait it will drop the disk and degrade the volume even though there is actually nothing wrong with the disk.

Intels ICH10 is buggy at best and likes to drop disks and, supposedly, has dropped even enterprise level disks BUT if you want to guarantee your RAID volumes reliability you need disks that either have configurable error recovery options or are RAID certified.

I run RAID-0 and have already had a disk drop. It's annoying but I'll live with it (I do not need redundancy and do not need backups of the data on this volume)

Does this mean that leaving a machine running 24/7 is better for the hard drives then constant stop/starting?
