I've just setup my new motherboard & chip, 2500k and AsRock Extreme 7 Gen 3. I would like to overclock to 4ghz maybe 4.2 and have no idea where to start.

My previous experience has been overclocking AMD chips on the old BIOS type. This is the first time I've used the BIOS.

I have increased the multiplier and that is about it. The turbo ends up being 4ghz, but that is the extent to my knowledge on this platform.

Would someone be kind enough to give me some details on how to achieve this please?

If your wanting to go to 4.0 on the chip this generally needs no voltage increase in most chips.

To achieve it simply go into bios and change the multiplyer to x40 and test you don't have to mess around with anything else.

I was unsure if it was that simple. Will try it and see how I get on.

Should I leave speedstep enabled?

Currently running @ 4.3 on stock volts with Speedstep & C's disabled. Had a round on BF3 and rock solid. I'm so overwhelmed by how nice this chip is compared to my old FX.

Glad to see your a convert. :)

They are insanely easily.

4.3 is great, I only managed 4.2 on stock. Give it a bit more of a push. :)

Well I've got to go and collect my bike for the Cycle2Work so for the next 30-40 mins, prime95 can tell me how stable it's going to be.

Wish I'd gone Intel sooner. BF3 is lag free when loading and everything is so responsive. My only learning curve now is the new BIOS.

sorry only just got back on the comp.
loooks like u have got some good info though, whats your ideal speed u want to get to? or are u pushing to see how far u can go?

It's been running Prime for 75 mins at 4.3 on stock volts. Will try for 4.4 and will be happy there.

under 1.4v.

If custom watercooled you can get away with pushing it to 1.45v

Benching, 1.45V (non-WC) - 1.5V WC

@snips: How did your Overclocking go buddy? :)

Still at 4.3 and stable on stock speeds.

Will push again later on this afternoon after I've managed to work out why my PC won't boot with my external drive connected. I got a feeling there's a wiring issue which may explain why my USB3 ports on my old board no longer work.

As soon as I can get this headache out the way, I'll aim for 4.4/5. So far so good and seriously impressed. I know I keep saying it, but it's great.

Off topic, any reason why I cannot get into the BIOS with my Logitech G510? It just doesnt respond to the F2/DEL option and I have to use an old USB K/B to get in.

So my wife has reported some teething issues:
- Windows update failed to complete and forced an unexpected reboot
- Keyboard then failed to respond and attempted a windows repair after booting to safe mode.

Despite being fine in Prime/BF3, there is obviously some fine tuning required.

vCore set to 1.3, LLC set to Level 3. Still running @ 4.3ghz and seems to be ok after 20 mins of prime, windows updates installing at same time.

What doesn't help is Windows failing to activate online, keyboard doesnt work in BIOS despite legacy USB being enabled. :(

On the up side, my other HDD works fine using the same cable & power adapter.

you can activate windows over the phone, pull internet wire from pc and activate, it will then give you the by phone option

badly crashing usually kicks windows into wanting to be activated again

with 16gb of memory try a touch more cpu/vtt also,maybe 1.10v from stock 1.05v

Yeah, it's my initial annoyance at having to move the phone from the lounge to the bedroom when it's not easily accessible.

The activation was due to a re-install of the OS, something I was trying to avoid.

CPU has now manually been set to 1.3v @ 4.3ghz, LLC to Level 2. Will run Prime while having tea to see how it goes.

Really appricaite your responses guys, this is such a learning curve with moving to a more 'modern' system. It's so alien compared to, as Doom said, a '90's BIOS.

How does this look?

Prime for 25 mins on these settings seems to be solid so far. 4th attempt. 3 BSOD's and 1 system hang pushes the vcore to 1.34 on 4.5ghz.

Edit:
1 hour and it BSOD's. Back to stock running at 4.2. I think this will have to do. I'd rather not make matters worse as i've only just got it.

Yes, it sounds like it. I suspect your temps are reaching 90 degrees +? You'll need to: A) Get better cooling, B) Decrease your overclock.

Well I've got a K2 with a TY-147 and HwMonitor is showing 65 as the highest it's gone. I wouldn't let it get to 90 in the first place if I'm honest.

So Far this failed - 4.5ghz, vCore 1.34v, LLC @ Level 2: This would start at 4.5, but drop to stock speeds/multi when running IntelBurnIn or Prime.

Currently running 4.4ghz, vCore 1.33v, LLC @ level 2: Multi seems to jump sporadically, but seems to be comfortable at 4.4 until the temp hits about 64-65. Prime is 30 mins in and seem to drop down the sped to 3.9/4ghz.

Yeah, it failed to boot completely when testing 4.3 @ 1.34v and Level 2 LLC.

So far, the most successful overclock I've had out of this has been at 4.2ghz with stock volts, C2/3, SpeedStep & turbo disabled.

The system completely flops over when trying to overclock the RAM using the XMP profile. I think I've reached the top with this one. 4.2 from 3.3 is good enough for me and BF3 has been a blessing to play on.

Thanks for your guidance.

In all honesty, the increase from stock to 4.2 has had an impact already. At sub 60 deg, I cannot complain. I may consider playing around with it more before I upgrade, but I'm happy with the current outcome.

now you need to convert you fixed voltage over to offset voltage and turn on all the power saving:D;)

and see how cool it runs at idle

I don't think I have change the voltage, it's running stock.

I had thought about re-enabling the power saving, but not sure on it's impact. I will have a play over the weekend as I cannot get into the BIOS using my Logitech G510. Will have to source my other KB.

OK, so I though I would give it a try anyway as I'm inpatient. Assuming I simply enable what I disabled, that consisted of C3, C6 & Power Saving Mode.

On rebooting, I got 'Machine Check Error'.

This obviously has some correlation to what I enabled, but not sure what.

Advise?
