I'm in the process of building a new PC and when its done I'm wanting to overclock (Never done it before).
The specs are:
MSi Mpower
3770K
8GB DDR3
Arctic Cooling Freezer I30

My question
When i start overclocking I go into bios and change the multiplier (I'll start around 4ghz) and check to see if its stable in prime95. How long do I test in prime95 at this stage as its quite early on?
Once this is done i up the multiplier more if its stable. How long do i test at this point?
If its not stable i up the core voltage. How long do i test at this point?
I hope you can Help :)

I generally run Prime95 for 30mins to one hour. I assume it is stable if it doesn't BSOD in that time. Just make sure you have a program like CPUID HWMonitor running to monitor temps.

Normally a few hours is a good test but if it's going to fail it will (normally) fail within the first 15 minutes. So 20-30 minutes is fine. You should be able to OC to 4Ghz easy on stock voltage.

Up the multiplier until it's not stable on stock voltage. Again, test for 30-45 minutes.

upto 4.3 test for 30 minutes (about). For 4.4-4.5 I would say a few hours just to be safe. As these clocks are a mid-high limit.

I hope this helps.
