Hey guys, thought id have a go at overclocking my CPU for like, the first time ever, but properly...well hopefully.

Basically, just a quick question about CPU-Z v.1.37....

On the "memory" tab, where it states the frequencey, is that an accurate measure of the RAM's speed? ie b4 the ddr is applied? Or should i be ignoring this...

Cause ive overclocked my cpu slightely, and in the Bios i have the ram to run at 400 (ie 200)...But as ive overclocked the cpu fsb a bit will this automatically highen the Ram speed?

Also i mite be asking some things about overclocking! Like whats the best settings i can aim for, like is it better to have a lower CPU multiplier with a higher FSB or vise versa etc...

Indeed, read a fair few overclocking things over the years...

Just to clarify tho, my ram is only rated at 400mhz, its the G.Skill ZX 2GB kit ones...Ive dropped them down to 333mhz just to see if things change...Need to read up on that i guess, to see if its more "beneficial" to have lower rated memory but a higher cpu clock speed or higher memory speed but a lower cpu speed.

Hmm...im currently running the CPU at 2480ghz ish...according to cpu-z...

See, now lowering my ram to running at 133mhz, instead of the already lower 333mhz, what that not hinder performance? Or would the increase in Cpu speed be THAT beneficial that the ram speed wont get hindered? :)

When you start overclocking you push the FSB on the ram up with the cpu, this why you lower (the divider) because you're overclocking will slowly bring the ram upto its rated speed or as near as you can get.

Hard to explain when you don't know. The guides explain it better then i can anyway... ;)

Yeah, thought the ram did that, just had to ask really...im not a complete beginner to overclocking as such, just never practised it as much as some. :)

But indeed i shant be trying the speeds posted above yet as i believe you'll have to up the v.core to get those speeds anyways...

I just tried running everything at 235x11 and i didnt get into windows, i got bsod.

Currently in windows running it at 230x11...then the Hypertransport speed is at 4x, if that was the rite word to use initially. Making it 920, which is within the 1000 "limit".

I'll post what i have done so far anyways...

Rite, currently got all voltages locked, ie ram, pci etc...

Running at 230x11, with the HT multiplyer at x4...

Its ran a few cycles of prime 95 on each core simultaniously, as well as Orthos.

However, one core seems to fail on prime 95 occasionally...not 100% sure what the reason is for this, any ideas? I dont really want to start adding extra volts through my chip as of yet, if at all, as im only on stock air cooling soon to buy a new fan etc.
 
Hey guys, thought i'd post an update...

Currently got the cpu at 2.6ghz, ~237 x 11, with the HT frequency x4...

Everything seems stable, ran Orthos for a while and it didnt spazz out, if i go above 237 Orthos fails on core one, me and Harris tried dropping the HT to x3 and upping the fsb to 237...but Core one still failed, so i'm presuming ive got just an annoying first core :P

Ah well, leaving it at 2.6Ghz and seeing how things pan out, going to soon buy a better cooler to keep temps down a tad more.

Thing is i wouldnt know what to change them to..like, at all... :(

Also i try to avoid upping voltages if possible...But yeah the freezer 64 pro is definetly an option, or ive been eyeing up the Scythe ninja / Tuniq tower...My friend mite be ridding himself of his Big typhoon soon also so even thats a possible candidate...

I have decided to start clocking my chip again for the hell of it :)

Currently got: 230 x 11, and then the HT at x4...Making the clock speed about 2.539 according to cpu-z.

If I go above 230mhz Orthos fails on the cpu stress test. I also have the RAM down to 200mhz currently =/ Still trying to figure out the dividers and stuff and whats best to use etc. Oh and 200mhz is the lowest my board supports. (Asus a8n-sli premium)

Anyone have any ideas on whats the best thing to do next?

Drop the Multiplier to x10? Then go from there...How about the HT setting. I'll have to keep an eye on that naturally depending on the bus speed i select.

The lowest bios setting i've seen is 200 Mhz...Unless an update gives you more options?

I've had the system at 258 x 10, but I think my comp froze over night...It's hard to tell, cause im having trouble getting video lately at boot with this board / graphics card...Doing my head in.

I'm currently running at 256 x 10 = 2560~ish...with the HT set to x3...

Oh and the ram's at 200mhz...should I set it to 1T as well?
 
Hey, currently got everything prime stable (Overnight) with the following:

250 x 10 = about 2500 Mhz

Ht multi is at x 4 making the frequency about 1000 or just over according to Cpu-Z....Is this ok?

My RAM is also set to 333Mhz in the bios, running at 1T. So in cpu-z its saying its running at 208~Mhz...Is this ok for 3200 ram?

I'm trying to get a good balance on the ram and cpu speeds, as i dont think ill be able to clock this much more =/

I shall check this for you when I get home :)

But I left my computer on over night doing two sets or Prime 95 for about 7 hours-ish and it stayed around 47 load for cpu, my chipset was about 48 as its passive.

I think idle its about 35-37.

I might give it a go...Just I'm not too keen on blaring loads of volts through the cpu just yet. Dont exactly have money laying around to replace the thing.
 
THATS! Why I dont really overclock! =P

Computer no longer shows post, just gives memory/graphics card beeps...Regardless if theres any memory even installed or not.

So its either cpu / RAM or motherboard..Joy joy :)
 
Rite...Question guys, is it worth me getting say an Opteron 180 over the 3800+??? Bearing in mind I had a 4400+ before.

I doubt ill be overclocking, cause yeah, look what happened :p

Will there be much difference from a 3800+ to the opteron 180/x2 4800??? Over my old 4400...cause of clock speeds and the cache?
