overclocking 4690k

so Ive recently got my self a i5 4690k so far ive disabled turbo and have all 4 cores running at 4.2Ghz on stock volts.
I'm using a gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI rev 1.2 board

so how far can I push the 4690k? Ive never played with volts before so im really looking for a step by step guide if possible.

ive not ran prime but when I ran intel burn I got mid 60's Im not sure what is to high for the 4690k.

70-80s is max temp, but lower is better and max vcore is 1.3ish.

Trying putting the multi to 45 and test if stable at stock volts, if not bump the vcore up a notch at a time, but try not to go past 1.25v as i dont know if the h80 will handle it.
 
I run a 4690k on a rig with a R'J Themis air cooler @4.5ghz with 1.21v on Z97 gigabyte board and along with 4x4 of not matching 2400 ram. Faultless and temps max at 71 absolute peak

think im looking at a cooler before I go playing with anymore overclocking...

I did a quick google and tried a few tricks like having the side off and pressing the waterblock to see if it was secure. I also checked that it was seated properly.. i get idle temps of 26 to 29c and during gaming it never goes over 60c but during stress test it shot up!!

Im half tempted to try a good air cooler.. any recommendations?

Did you change the volts and what about turning the fans up on the h80.

For a air cooler the best is a D15
 
so Ive been in and checking my bios. the only thing ive done is disabled turbo and increased the multi.
Ive put this back to 42 which is where I had it sitting before.
I ran Intel burn and got to 85c according to core temp and speccy.
so I ran cpuz and I see my core voltage is sitting at 1.322v
a quick google and I don't see anyone using this high a voltage!! so this could explain my high temp.
again I went into the bios and all the voltage settings are at auto which is where they were as default..
whats causing this? it seems to sit at this constantly.
Im going to reset my bios and see what happens voltage wise. will report back.

so I reset the bios.
disabled the on board graphics, booted into windows at standard clock and ran Intel burn
and my temps never went over 57c and that was only on one core and my core voltage was sitting at a nice 1.120v.
after this I went back into bios disabled turbo set the multi to 42 and then went into windows. opened cpuz I never even done a stress test and my voltage was back up to 1.322v!! can I ask!! WTF am I doing wrong!!! ive even tried setting my turbo to 42 and it still increases my volts..

Unless you use manual input for vcore the bios will automatically increase it as you increase the multi.Manually set the vcore to 1.25v and the multi to 45x and test.Don't use IBT tho use realbench or x264 for testing.

1.322 is a safe voltage but you should be able to get 4.5ghz at under 1.3 with a 4690
 
everyday is a school day.. so I set my vcore to 1.25 and I downloaded realbench and done a stress test.
so after 15 minutes of realbench the highest I got was 66c on one core.
I also reset the high and low on core temp then ran an intel burn out of interest. and it never went over 78c and that was set at 4.3 where as ive only ever went up to 4.2 before.

I know Mr MD said not to use it but I was curious. out of interest.. does intel burn get used nowadays for a stress test?

IBT uses the AVX2 instruction set,when used on haswell it can increace your vcore by upto 0.1v.Obviously this generates a LOT of extra heat,and will you will become thermally limited a lot quicker,IBT is also extremely demanding and not really representative of loads your CPU will run in day to day use.Realbench is good as hits that balance of being demanding,but not OTT on heat generation.


Try 4.4/4.5 if your not stable just up your vcore a touch.4.5/4.6Ghz should be achievable for you.

Use realbench,will give you less scary temps lol
 
so I went for the 4.5.. I ran realbench and ive only gained 1c on the max temp so Im pretty chuffed at that.
will this be pretty safe to run 24/7?
